YAY Or NAY: USC’s Biggest And Most Immediate Needs Have Been Filled

The spring transfer window closed over a week ago. At this point, when it comes to filling USC’s spring transfer biggest and most immediate needs, Lincoln Riley might as well say, better late than never. The Trojans haven’t landed a single offensive lineman (yet), and the chatter behind the scenes is noticeably quiet.

USC is taking too long to find their most important transfer portal additions.

There is no way to spin Lincoln Riley’s words into a positive narrative. Lincoln Riley has gone on record during the winter and spring offseason noting that the Trojans need offensive and defensive linemen to help with depth via the transfer portal, and yet thus far, they’ve swung and missed. Coach Riley said, “An interior defensive lineman is probably the biggest need, God didn’t make many of those guys. That’s the most immediate need for us.”

And the Trojans’ one defensive lineman signee is transfer Nate Clifton from Vanderbilt. No offense to Clifton, however, his addition isn’t enough, USC needs more.

As each day passes, and with few if any immediate impact transfers still available in the transfer portal to fill USC’s biggest needs, Coach Riley’s next comment can’t be, “Well, we took our time, we were diligent, and we got who we wanted.” Trojan fans and the media will see right through that.

USC’s other immediate need, hasn’t landed a single offensive lineman (yet), and that chatter behind the scenes is noticeably quiet.

I’m not sure, but the longer Coach Riley’s “Snipe Hunt” takes, I don’t think he’ll be able to spin it into a positive, because right now he’s holding an empty bag.–Maybe that’s the problem?

The Trojans have one of the top 10 wide-receiving units in the country.

It’s not an opinion I agree with, and I actually find the idea laughable. But in today’s world of clickbait interactions, there is someone out there who believes that there are ten college football programs with better wide receiver room than USC.

Top 10 College Football Wide Receiver Units per @JesseReSimonton

I’ve said it before. The offseason is often filled with way-too-early-top-whatever-lists to help us pass the time. All I ask is, can we at least keep these lists somewhat respectable? The lack of consistency with the list’s rationale is alarming when his No. 2 group of wide receivers biggest strength being, they’ll be playing in their offensive cooridnator’s system for a second year in a row.

Maybe someone should remind Mr. Simonton that sophomores Zachariah Branch, Duce Robinson, Ja’Kobi Lane, and Makai Lemon are also going into their second season with their offensive coordinator who puts wide receivers in the NFL annually.–Or just go watch a replay of the Holiday bowl when the Trojan receivers destroyed one of the top pass defenses in the country.

There is certainly other programs with top-flight receiver rooms and depth to match the talent, like Ohio St. However, if I lined up 10 random college football fans off the street, and said, you have to choose between the No. 10 ranked group (Colorado), and USC’s group, the Trojans will win the popularity contest.

USC’s 2025 recruiting class will get another May commitment.

NAY. —

This a total hunch on my part based on the writing that’s on the wall.

However, with USC’s June official visit weekends quickly approaching, it’s starting to look like Willi Wascher’s April 12th commitment might be the last one the Trojans will see until the month of June. It’s been nearly a month since USC received a verbal commitment, and with the lack of transfer portal interest, any commitment from someone would keep some momentum going.

USC has the No. 3 rated class in the country and they’re in the running for some elite talent, but right now the recruits are in a holding pattern.

Maybe the recruits are waiting on the transfer portal results to be posted?
