Yankees-Rockies umpire carted off after Giancarlo Stanton’s bat splinters, hits him in the throat
Home plate umpire Nick Mahrley was stretchered off the field at Yankee Stadium Sunday after taking Giancarlo Stanton‘s shattered bat to the throat during the bottom half of the fifth inning of New York’s home game against the Colorado Rockies.
After Stanton broke his bat on a bloop single off LHP Austin Gomber, the barrel flew backwards and connected with Mahrley’s mask, knocking it off. He immediately fell to the ground and was tended to by the Yankees’ training staff. Mahrley received a standing ovation from the crowd as he was stretchered off the field.
Mahrley, 41, became a full-time umpire in 2023. He previously worked 473 games as a call-up umpire.
Play resumed with crew chief Marvin Hudson taking over behind the dish. Hunter Wendelstedt moved from second base to first base.
Yankees in full Bronx Bombers mode vs. Rockies
The Yankees are going for the series win Sunday after recording a 3-0 shutout victory Friday before falling 9-2 Saturday. With a win, New York would remain in front of the Baltimore Orioles for first place in the AL East and behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in all of MLB.
Later in the game, Juan Soto, Aaron Judge and Stanton belted back-to-back-to-back home runs to give the Yankees a 7-3 lead. Judge’s solo shot was his second of the game and league-leading 51st of the season. He joined Babe Ruth as the only player in Yankees history with three plus seasons of 50 home runs or more.
Judge is now slashing an incredible .334/.466/.738 on the season, well on his way to his second AL MVP Award.
“He’s just incredible,” Soto recently said of Judge. “And the consistency that he has, I think that’s one of the things I admire most. It doesn’t matter if the game is 10 runs up or 10 runs down. He’s going to take a great at-bat and try to do damage to the other team.”
