WR Tawaski Abrams on Gators fans: ‘I just can’t wait to play in front of those guys’

WR Tawaski Abrams on Gators fans: ‘I just can’t wait to play in front of those guys’

Over the weekend, Gators four-star wide receiver commit Tawaski Abrams took in his first-ever college football game. It was for UF’s homecoming victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Abrams, a product of Fort Myers (Fla.) Dunbar, was also committed to FSU at one point; however, he made that decision in late January and then flipped to Florida in July. He never attended a game inside Doak Campbell Stadium prior to that either.

But after returning to Gainesville on Saturday, Abrams has no regrets on how his recruitment played out.

“It was my first college game, so it being a win, it was definitely good. When I went to my first NFL game, the team lost. It was a good change of events,” Abrams told Gators Online.

“I never really knew what a home-field advantage really was until I got there. With the fans boosting them up and making it hard for players on the other side of the ball to hear the plays, it was crazy.”

Saturday was a day to remember for Abrams

Even prior to attending Saturday’s game, Abrams clearly viewed Florida as the school that checks the most boxes. Much of that is due to the hospitality and strong relationships he has constructed with numerous staff members. It was a full-court press to flip his commitment in mid-July.

But after journeying up to campus for a game day, Abrams says that experience now stands out the most.

“Just the atmosphere. Those fans, I just can’t wait to play in front of those guys,” Abrams said.

Considering it was Abrams’ first UF visit since the summer, it’s no surprise several staff members provided him with a home-like feel. One of them was wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales.

“Nothing has changed really; if anything, it’s gotten stronger,” Abrams said of the message. “Coach Billy Gonzales made sure I got home yesterday, which was good. It makes him feel like a father figure almost.

“They are definitely cool people. It’s good those are the guys that get to coach me because anyone else it probably wouldn’t be the same relationship I have with them,” said Abrams.

Nothing but Orange and Blue

If all goes as planned, Abrams will be graduating high school in December and then relocating to UF shortly after the New Year. Prior to that, he will be attending the Florida-FSU game on Nov. 25.

Prospects, at the earliest, cannot sign until December though. Is Abrams planning to visit other programs?

“I’ll say I’m completely done,” said Abrams.

According to the On3 Consensus Ranking, the Sunshine State native is the No. 47 wide receiver and No. 275 prospect overall. He is also the 35th-ranked senior in the state.
