On Wednesday evening the Sooners landed their first defensive lineman of the class of 2024, Wyatt Gilmore. It’s time to take a look at the 6-foot-4, 245-pound pass rusher and see what made him a priority for Oklahoma defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis.

Gilmore, who currently ranks as the nation’s No. 43 EDGE and No. 662 overall player chose the Sooners over offers from Miami, Oregon, Minnesota, and several others.

What’s On Tape for Commit Wyatt Gilmore

At a position where foot speed and agility are often the hallmarks, Gilmore’s hands may be what truly stick out. Not only is he a powerful guy at the point of attack – standing up one blocker after another – but he’s also good in keeping blockers away from his body.

The powerfully built defensive end uses his hands as effectively as any young defensive end you’ll find. Whether it’s disengaging a block or getting underneath a blockers pads and cutting off an outside run before it can begin, he’s highly effective.

His ability to use leverage, strength, and solid technique make for a quality run stopper. But, what of his ability to impact the quarterback?

Gilmore’s hallmark may be hand placement but it isn’t just as a run defender he finds use of them. In the pass game showing a surprising variety of moves for such a young EDGE. The Sooners commitment has a great motor and can be seen pursuing ball carriers from snap to whistle.

His strength allows him to hold off blockers and simultaneously keep his eyes on the backfield to read and react. He regularly is seen reading a play in the backfield before shedding his block as a play starts to go wide.

Gilmore can be a bit upright and isn’t an elite ‘turn the corner’ defensive end. That said, he has a great motor, strong hands, and shows proficiency as a run and pass defender.

Sooners Commit Comparison

As Oklahoma’s latest commitment an interesting parallel can be drawn between he and Sooners transfer Rondell Bothroyd. The comparison resonates due to their sturdy frames, strong run defense, and ability to get underneath blockers.

The post Wyatt Gilmore Breakdown appeared first on On3.

Oklahoma’s summer run, something that feels like it’s becoming a hallmark of Brent Venables‘s recruiting…

[1

post-9049","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
