Penn State football will hold its annual Lift for Life event on Thursday. The workout-based fundraiser benefits the rare disease community and has been raising money for it since 2009, when Scott Shirley founded it and Uplifting Athletes.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen Shirley\u2019s Penn State teammate, Damon Jones, learned of the challenges the Shirley family was enduring when Scott\u2019s father, Don Shirley, was diagnosed with a rare disease in 2002, Damon suggested that they do something since they were in a position to shine their spotlight on those who needed a voice,\u201d the Uplifting Athletes website says<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n \u201cThe Penn State football team rallied around the idea of leveraging a summer strength and conditioning competition into a fundraising event called Lift For Life\u00a0by opening it up to their fans and the media. They soon realized that the benefits of this new organization were far greater than they had imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n Uplifting Athlete chapters are now at schools across the country. Penn State\u2019s has raised $1,407,412.17 so far. Here\u2019s how you can both attend the event, and help swell that total, this year.<\/p>\n It will be held today, Thurs., June 22. The Holuba Hall doors that are accessible via the\u00a0Holuba Hall\/East Area Locker Room parking lot will open at 3:30 p.m. The action will then take place inside Holuba Hall starting at 4 p.m. It typically runs 90 minutes to two hours.<\/p>\n Lift for Life is free to attend. But, a donation of $10\u00a0for\u00a0adults and $5\u00a0for\u00a0kids is suggested to support the cause. Donations will be taken at the door. <\/p>\n According to a Penn State news release:<\/p>\n \u201cFans are asked to park in Jordan East (formerly Lot 44). Fans will be required to pay\u00a0for\u00a0parking via the ParkMobile app. Each available parking area has an associated ParkMobile zone number (posted on entrance signage\u00a0for\u00a0general areas and at available ADA parking spaces), which is selected within the ParkMobile app to pay\u00a0for\u00a0parking\u00a0for\u00a0that location. It starts at 4:30 and runs until 5:30. Penn State first-year players typically run that while others go through the workouts.
