Jerry Jones<\/strong> and the Dallas Cowboys<\/strong> dropped the ultimate Friday night news dump when they announced<\/a> the hiring of offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer<\/a><\/strong> as the Cowboys\u2019 new head coach<\/a> at 9:45 pm ET, Jan. 24.<\/p>\n

It was interesting timing, mostly given the brevity of the Dallas coaching search, which lasted just 11 days since the team officially moved on from Mike McCarthy after five years at the helm on Jan. 13.<\/p>\n

NFL Network<\/strong>\u2018s Ian Rapoport<\/strong> pulled back the curtain on how the hiring went down, acknowledging the \u201cunderwhelming\u201d reaction from Cowboys fans to the Schottenheimer promotion.<\/p>\n

\u201c(The Cowboys) did a very short search, shorter than most I can remember, only interviewed a couple of people \u2014 Robert Saleh<\/a><\/strong>, Leslie Frazier<\/a><\/strong>, Kellen Moore<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 the Eagles OC \u2014 and then landed on Brian Schottenheimer<\/strong>,\u201d Rapoport reported Sunday morning<\/a>. \u201cSomething that probably seems a little underwhelming to say the least for Cowboys fans, but inside the building they believe Schottenheimer can lead. And certainly something Dak Prescott<\/a><\/strong> can support. <\/p>\n

\u201cI can also say, a favorite to be his defensive coordinator is Matt Eberflus<\/a><\/strong>, the former Bears head coach who of course was on the Cowboys staff several years ago. That would be an excellent hire for them. But Brian Schottenheimer<\/strong>, against all odds, the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Cowboys initially hired Schottenheimer as a consultant in 2022. However, he was promoted to offensive coordinator on Feb. 4, 2023. Now, Schottenheimer will take the final step on the staff ladder and have a chance to lead the Cowboys.<\/p>\n

The Cowboys averaged 328.4 yards per game this past season under Schottenheimer\u2019s guidance. While the figure still ranked in the top half of the league, the Cowboys were at a disadvantage, with key offensive players like Prescott<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and wide receiver\u00a0Brandin Cooks<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0missing large chunks of the season due to injury.<\/p>\n

Cowboys Hall of Famer\u00a0Michael Irvin<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0shared his thoughts on the team\u2019s new head coach. And he wasn\u2019t pleased on Saturday night. <\/p>\n

In an\u00a0NSFW video he posted<\/a><\/strong>, Irvin let everyone know that he was disappointed with the hire of\u00a0Brian Schottenheimer as the Dallas next head coach<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cWe lost an opportunity here,\u201d Irvin said. \u201cI was pushing for Deion Sanders to be the next head coach. And I still stand ten toes down on that push,\u201d he said in an article written by\u00a0ProFootballTalk\u2019s Mike Florio<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Hall of Famer isn\u2019t happy that Dallas will be sitting at home watching a couple of division rivals compete for a spot in this year\u2019s Super Bowl.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have two NFC East teams in the NFC Championship game being played tomorrow,\u201d Irvin said. \u201cAll eyes on them. The Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders. Our enemies on all fronts. . . And [in] a position that we haven\u2019t held in 30 f***ing years.\u201d<\/p>\n
