During his coaching days, Nick Saban<\/a><\/strong> was famous for his on-field \u201cass-chewings\u201d of assistants and occassional combative interactions with local media.<\/p>\n

Turns out the former Alabama Crimson Tide<\/a><\/strong> head coach brought a similar antagonistic attitude home with him, especially whenever his daughter, Kristen<\/strong>, had prospective dates over to the house growing up.<\/p>\n

Saban, now a full calendar year into his post-coaching career as an ESPN College GameDay<\/em><\/strong> analyst, opened up about how he handled his daughter\u2019s prospective suitors during a recent appearance on The Pivot Podcast<\/em><\/a> with former NFL players Ryan Clark<\/a><\/strong>, Fred Taylor<\/strong> and Channing Crowder<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they come and the doorbell rang, and Kristen had a date, everybody ran to open the door because they didn\u2019t want me to open it. Because if I opened it, first thing I looked at the guy and say, \u2018What do you play?\u2019 just to intimidate the shit out of \u2018em,\u201d Saban said with a wry smile<\/a>. \u201cAnd everybody in the house is like, \u2018Oh no, dad, don\u2019t do that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

For the seven-time national champion head coach, that opening salvo was an attempt to gauge the competitiveness of those attempting to date his adoptive daughter, Kristen, now 29. <\/p>\n

Clark then asked Saban how he reacted if his daughter\u2019s date didn\u2019t play any sports.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d still invite the guy in, but he\u2019d know I was disappointed that he wasn\u2019t a competitor,\u201d Saban added.<\/p>\n

Nick Saban, 73, has noticably mellowed since he left coaching behind, revealing a more light-hearted side of his personality during TV appearances on College GameDay<\/em> and The Pat McAfee Show<\/em>. Those closest to him credit Saban\u2019s doting relationship with his two grandchildren for his late-in-life shift in temperament, an assessment the former coach proudly accepts.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the grandkids, I don\u2019t know if I can hold them to the same standard because I just melt around the grandkids,\u201d Saban said with a smile. \u201cI just melt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former\u00a0Alabama<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0coach\u00a0Nick Saban<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0has now officially gone a full year away from the sidelines as a mentor, and he seems to be right at home in his new role as a media personality. His wife,\u00a0Miss Terry<\/strong>, certainly seems to be enjoying the new gig, too.<\/p>\n

But much about what drove Saban to leave the sidelines has remained a mystery.<\/p>\n

In an appearance on\u00a0The Pivot<\/em>\u00a0podcast<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0Ryan Clark<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Channing Crowder<\/a><\/strong>, Saban revealed one key factor in his retirement decision came directly from Miss Terry.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the end, the last year, we always have the parents over on Saturday night for karaoke and all the players on Sunday morning for breakfast when we\u2019re recruiting,\u201d Saban explained. \u201cAnd one day she came up to me and she said, \u2018Why are we doing this?\u2019 And I said, \u2018Why do you say that?\u2019 And she said, \u2018It\u2019s always about relationships, but now it\u2019s about how much money you\u2019re going to pay them.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that was one of the things that she hated, that she wasn\u2019t developing relationships with the players and having them over.\u201d<\/p>\n
