Boise State<\/a><\/strong> defensive coordinator Erik Chinander<\/a><\/strong> was likely not prepared for the question that came his way late in a Friday afternoon news conference to preview the Fiesta Bowl. Despite that fact, he answered the query well and gave insight into how his Broncos are preparing to face Penn State.<\/p>\n

The question was this: Do you like [the Penn State] offense? All the shifts and motions they do. Their D coordinator (Tom Allen)\u00a0 said: I\u2019m very impressed with Ashton [Jeanty]. I don\u2019t like going against him, but I\u2019m impressed.\u00a0 Is it a fun offense, I guess, to look at?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

What was the answer?<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, I don\u2019t like what they do, for our sake,\u201d Chinander said<\/a>. \u201cBut no, I think it\u2019s great. It causes a lot of stress on defense. It causes a lot of communication by your guys. Obviously, what they want is\u00a0for us to sit in that room and look through all the stuff that you have to get adjusted to. It takes a lot of\u00a0 time, from coaches, staff, players.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they do a great job with their offense. I think they do a great job of using the pieces they have\u00a0 very, very appropriately and getting them in the best position they can to be successful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chinander, who is in his first season as the defensive coordinator for the Mountain West champs, is tasked with stopping an Andy Kotelnicki offense that features lots of window dressing, heaps of toppings for an ice cream sundae, so to speak, and, of course, an arsenal of weapons that starts with All-American tight end Tyler Warren<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, he\u2019s an elite player. Won some awards, which he definitely\u00a0deserves,\u201d Chinander said. \u201cReally good in the run game, makes some unbelievable catches, runs great routes. I think\u00a0 he can do a lot. I mean, they put him as a wildcat quarterback. He can throw the ball, run the ball. Just\u00a0 a really, really good player, and I think that he makes every part of their offense better.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, usually, especially in passing situations, you\u2019re looking at how can you\u00a0 eliminate a receiver from the game,\u201d Chinander said. \u201cIt becomes more difficult when it\u2019s a tight end because he\u2019s in the\u00a0 corps. He could be running the ball. You don\u2019t have a corner, or potentially you don\u2019t have a safety that\u00a0 you can dedicate to him. It does cause some issues in the pass game, certainly. And then if you try to\u00a0 go sellout overboard on the pass game on him, then it can hurt you in the run game. So, it causes\u00a0 some definite issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

On PSU running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen<\/h3>\n\n

\u201cI think maybe at the beginning of the year, they were used a little\u00a0 differently,\u201d Chinander said. \u201cLater in the year, that\u2019s one of the better running back tandems I have even seen in a long\u00a0 time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing that impresses me about both of them is how physical they run the football. They are hard to\u00a0 tackle. Physical in the run game, physical in the pass pro. I just like the way they play football. They\u2019re\u00a0 a good one-two punch. I don\u2019t think there\u2019s one that\u2019s better than the other. I think they\u2019re just a lot to\u00a0 handle.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the Penn State offensive line<\/h3>\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a very big and athletic group,\u201d Chinander said. \u201cThey can get running on their midzone. They\u00a0 can really go. You guys have watched film. But you see defensive linemen a lot losing their gap integrity\u00a0 almost double-hatted because it\u2019s such an athletic group. They get talked about because it\u2019s a big\u00a0 group. But I think it\u2019s very athletic for how big of people they have.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll even put an offensive lineman out in the slot and motion him down and try to kick out a defensive\u00a0 end or trap a tackle, which causes another layer of confusion in communication on our part. I think this\u00a0 is a really good offensive line.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLike I said, you don\u2019t get to this part of football unless you have a really good offensive line. Boise State\u00a0 has got a really good offensive line. Penn State has a really good offensive line. But it takes that to get\u00a0 to this point in the football season.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Stacy has done a great job of giving us a preliminary scouting report on the roster,\u201d Chinander said. \u201cHe wasn\u2019t there with either one of these coordinators, but he gave us a\u00a0 really good outlook on just the players. What do they do best? How have they been used in the past?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat kind of speed do they have? When you\u2019re watching film, there\u2019s a lot of speed every single game\u00a0 they\u2019re playing, but what kind of speed is there really out there? But he\u2019s done a really good job of\u00a0 giving us that scouting report on their roster.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Lions QB Drew Allar<\/h3>\n\n

\u201cDrew Allar is a heck of a quarterback,\u201d Chinander said. \u201cI\u2019m not an NFL GM, but I think he\u2019s a first round pick. He\u2019s\u00a0much bigger than I think people believe when you\u2019re watching TV. I don\u2019t think you realize how big he is. He can make every throw, and then obviously they used another couple guys to wildcat run. But\u00a0 he\u2019s very efficient with his legs. Like, when the pocket breaks down, he\u2019s going to be able to make a\u00a0 first down. He\u2019s going to make a lot of those plays. A lot of respect for him as a quarterback.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe other thing I think is very impressive about him, in my personal opinion, he makes some of his\u00a0 best throws when he\u2019s under duress, when he\u2019s keeping the play alive, when he\u2019s moving around in\u00a0 the pocket. He\u2019s made some really unbelievable throws on the move and under stress. That causes\u00a0 an issue, too. We\u2019ve got to do a great job of leveraging the pocket and plastering in the coverage.\u201d<\/p>\n
