The Minnesota Vikings (9-2) are signing free agent quarterback Daniel Jones<\/a><\/strong> to their practice squad, Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports<\/em><\/a> reported Wednesday. <\/p>\n

Jones, 27, was granted his release from the New York Giants earlier this month after being benched in favor of Tommy DeVito<\/a><\/strong>. Jones will have the opportunity to step into the backup role behind Sam Darnold<\/a><\/strong>, a spot currently occupied by Nick Mullens<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cA key factor in Daniel Jones signing with the Vikings was his relationship with HC Kevin O\u2019Connell, which actually dates back to the pre-draft process. I\u2019m told the two maintained positive communication over the past few days, with KOC believing not only in Jones\u2019 talent, but also that Minnesota is the perfect place to reinvigorate his career,\u201d Schultz wrote on X.<\/p>\n

Jones signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension in March 2023 after leading the Giants to the playoffs in 2022. Jones guided New York to a 9-6-1 record with a Wild Card Round win that season. But with his play falling off the last two seasons, New York made the decision to move on. Jones also had a $23 million injury guarantee for next season.<\/p>\n

Daniel Jones gets a fresh start with Vikings<\/h2>\n

The No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL<\/a><\/strong> Draft out of\u00a0Duke<\/a><\/strong>, Jones finished his Giants career with a 24-44-1 record and 70 touchdown passes to go along with 47 interceptions. New York will take on a $22.21 million dead cap hit in 2025.<\/p>\n

Jones\u00a0shared a goodbye<\/a>\u00a0to Giants fans upon taking to the podium on Nov. 21 \u2014 one day before his release.<\/p>\n
