Many questions surfaced as to why the PGA Tour would merge with LIV Golf<\/a>, considering the league\u2019s strong stance against the startup just a year ago. Apparently, the Tour didn\u2019t have the financial backing to go toe-to-toe with Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund. That\u2019s reportedly what commissioner Jay Monahan<\/a> told PGA employees.<\/p>\n

The Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em> reported that Monahan told PGA Tour employees that it couldn\u2019t afford to continue its legal fight against Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund while also increasing its own purses. <\/p>\n

Since some of golf\u2019s top athletes jumped over to LIV Golf, the PGA Tour started increasing tournament winnings in an effort to keep others from leaving. Per the Wall Street Journal<\/em>, Monahan told employees the Tour had spent $50 million in legal fees.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot compete with a foreign government with unlimited money,\u201d Monahan reportedly said during the meeting. \u201cThis was the time. \u2026 We waited to be in the strongest possible position to get this deal in place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, Monahan revealed<\/a> that the PGA Tour would work with LIV Golf moving forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter two years of disruption and distraction, this is a historic day for the game we all know and love,\u201d\u00a0PGA TOUR commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cThis transformational partnership recognizes the immeasurable strength of the PGA TOUR\u2019s history, legacy and pro-competitive model and combines with it the DP World Tour and LIV \u2013 including the team golf concept \u2013 to create an organization that will benefit golf\u2019s players, commercial and charitable partners and fans. Going forward, fans can be confident that we will, collectively, deliver on the promise we\u2019ve always made \u2013 to promote competition of the best in professional golf and that we are committed to securing and driving the game\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rory McIlroy says he still \u2018hates\u2019 LIV Golf<\/h2>\n

Although it appears the PGA Tour and LIV Golf will be working together, not everyone on the Tour is happy about it. Rory McIlroy doubled down on his hatred<\/a> of the startup league after the announcement was made.<\/p>\n

McIlroy said there\u2019s a distinction between LIV Golf and who the PGA Tour is actually working with.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not LIV. That\u2019s the thing. I still hate LIV,\u201d\u00a0McIlroy said<\/a>. \u201cLike, I hate LIV. I hope it goes away, and I would fully expect that it does. That\u2019s where the distinction here is. This is the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour and the PIF. Very different from LIV.\u201d<\/p>\n

McIlroy stood up for the PGA Tour in multiple instances as LIV Golf stole headlines. So, he wasn\u2019t exactly thrilled with the decision his league had to make.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard for me to not sit up here and feel somewhat like a sacrificial lamb and feeling like I\u2019ve put myself out there and this is what happens,\u201d McIlroy said. \u201cAgain, removing myself from the situation, I see how this is better for the game of golf. There\u2019s no denying that. But for me as an individual, yeah, I, there\u2019s just going to have to be conversations that are had.\u201d<\/p>\n
