Former South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s time could be coming.<\/p>\n

The rookie signal-caller is a \u201cstrong candidate\u201d to make his first career NFL start this Sunday, according to a report from the NFL Network\u2019s Mike Garafal<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Saints starting quarterback Derek Carr is expected to miss multiple weeks<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0after suffering an oblique injury in a \u00a026-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday.<\/p>\n

New Orleans is set to host Tampa Bay Sunday at 1 p.m. on FOX.<\/p>\n

Rattler and Jake Haener<\/a><\/strong> battled it out in the preseason for the right to be Carr\u2019s backup. It was Haener who replaced Carr in Monday night\u2019s game, completing 2 of 7 passes for 17 yards with no touchdowns or picks.<\/p>\n

Rattler has yet to appear in a regular-season NFL game but has some impressive moments in the preseason, completing 20 of 38 passes for 202 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions<\/p>\n

Rattler finished his career in Columbia with 6,212 yards passing, 37 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.<\/p>\n

As a recruit, Rattler was a five-star prospect and one of the most sought after players in the country coming out of Pinnacle High School in Phoenix. He ranked as the No. 1 quarterback in the 2019 cycle\u00a0according to the On3 Industry Ranking<\/a><\/strong>, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.<\/p>\n

Rattler was thought to go as high as the second round in the draft but fell to the fifth where the Saints took him with the 150 overall pick.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they\u2019re getting a guy with a huge upside,\u201d Shane Beamer said at the time during an interview on the NOF Network<\/a>. \u201cFantastic person, somebody that obviously, you know, I\u2019ve been around since 2019 when we were together at Oklahoma.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he has just been through so much adversity,\u201d Beamer said. \u201cHis story? He has weathered some storms from what happened at Oklahoma, some of the adversity he felt he dealt with here at South Carolina with injuries and whatnot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rattler threw for over 10,800 yards, 77 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions in his college career.<\/p>\n
