Oregon coach Dan Lanning<\/a><\/strong> spoke with media following the Ducks\u2019 31-10 handling of Michigan State and discussed the run game\u2019s dominant performance, Oregon\u2019s pass rush, and more. Below are the most notable questions and quotes from Lanning\u2019s interview as well as my thoughts at the end.<\/p>\n

Opening Statement:<\/h2>\n

\u201cOur fans were absolutely awesome tonight. Any time you can play a physical game like that and control the running game on both sides of the ball it\u2019s going to lead to success. Clean, relatively on special teams play, really good on third down. Still some moments for growth in the red zone and it could hurt you later on so that\u2019s definitely something we\u2019ll attack moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Oregon\u2019s rushing success:<\/h2>\n

\u201cI think our offensive staff had a really great plan, understanding where we wanted to attack in the run game. Our offensive line blocked well and we blocked well at the second level as well as not going down on first contact.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the Ducks\u2019 defense over the last two games:<\/h2>\n

\u201cUltimately that\u2019s our standard we want to perform to week in and week out regardless of opponent. We knew they had an attack that was tough to stop and once we secured the run game it made them play kind of left-handed.\u201d<\/p>\n

On quarterback Dillon Gabriel<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s first half interceptions:<\/h2>\n

\u201cWe had a conversation but that\u2019s an opportunity to reset. That\u2019s a guy who\u2019s played a lot of snaps in college football. Timing is so important as is knowing where you are on the field so I think those will be good growth moments for Dillon.\u201d<\/p>\n

On defensive lineman Jordan Burch<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s dominance this year:<\/h2>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s playing with great violence and he\u2019s the kind of person that shouldn\u2019t be blocked one-on-one. We\u2019re doing a good job of creating those one-on-ones and he\u2019d be the first to tell you that a great rush starts with great coverage.\u201d<\/p>\n

On wide receiver Tez Johnson<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s reliability at wide receiver:<\/h2>\n

\u201cOur offensive staff does an unbelievable job of moving him around so it\u2019s hard to get a beat on where Tez is gonna be on a given play. He\u2019s an elusive player who\u2019s hard to cover and has great burst. He\u2019s become a safety net in a lot of ways for our offense.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the importance of tonight\u2019s cancer awareness game:<\/h2>\n

\u201cThis game was definitely special for a lot of people and anyone who\u2019s been affected by cancer. Certainly special for our family and a lot of people tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

On defensive tackle Ja\u2019Maree Caldwell<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s impact:<\/h2>\n

\u201cAnyone who watches film knows that Ja\u2019Maree\u2019s affecting the game. He\u2019s playing with great effort so I\u2019m really proud of his growth and performance this season.\u201d<\/p>\n

On red zone offense issues:<\/h2>\n

\u201cI think just timing. The last two weeks those have been later balls and we have to do a better job of that as well as knowing that we already have points in those situations.\u201d<\/p>\n

On next week\u2019s matchup against Ohio State:<\/h2>\n

\u201cFinally you guys can talk about it. It\u2019s a great team and there\u2019s a reason they\u2019re one of the best in the country so it\u2019s going to be a great challenge for us and our fans are going to need to show up and be phenomenal in that one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Linden\u2019s Take:<\/h2>\n

This was another nice, smooth performance from the Ducks. Gabriel\u2019s first half interceptions slowed what could otherwise have been a serious rout but there wasn\u2019t a lot else to complain about. Lanning\u2019s comments about having a plan for the rushing attack ring true as Jordan James<\/a><\/strong> found space off the edge a number of times. <\/p>\n

Oregon\u2019s pass rush seems to get better by the week and I\u2019ve been impressed with the defensive line\u2019s contributions from guys like Burch, Derrick Harmon<\/a><\/strong>, and Matayo Uiagalelei<\/a><\/strong>, as well as others. The Ducks will give Ohio State everything they have next week and I expect a barn burner at Autzen.<\/p>\n
