The timing of the Texas Longhorns<\/a><\/strong>\u2018 bye week couldn\u2019t have been better as starting quarterback Quinn Ewers<\/a><\/strong> continues to rehab and seek a return from injury ahead of the team\u2019s biggest game of the season next weekend. Facing off against rival Oklahoma<\/a><\/strong> next Saturday on October 12. <\/p>\n

Ewers has missed Texas\u2019 last two games after suffering from an abdominal strain early in the second quarter of the Longhorns\u2019 Week 3 matchup against UTSA<\/a><\/strong>. And during his press conference on Monday<\/a>, head coach Steve Sarkisian<\/a><\/strong> provided an injury update for his starting quarterback. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s just rehabbing as he has been,\u201d Sarkisian said. \u201cI think he\u2019s been making steady progress one day to the next, which is a good sign. We haven\u2019t had any setbacks, it\u2019s been steady progress. I think he\u2019s getting stronger and more comfortable and more confident, and so we\u2019ll just kind of stay the course with that.\u201d <\/p>\n

Ewers\u2019 most recent injury marks the third straight season where he\u2019s missed time for Texas due to an injury. Hurting his shoulder in 2022 against Alabama<\/a><\/strong> and missing the next three games followed by another shoulder injury in 2023 suffered against Houston<\/a><\/strong> that led to two more games out of the starting lineup. <\/p>\n

His most recent abdominal injury came on a non-contact play, listed as questionable ahead of Texas\u2019 most recent matchup against Mississippi State<\/a><\/strong> before being ruled out 90 minutes before kickoff. As some early reports already suggest<\/a> that Ewers is expected to play in the Red River Rivalry game next weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s got to do enough to show me he can play,\u201d\u00a0Sarkisian said<\/a>. \u201cI know that\u2019s probably not the answer you wanted, but that\u2019s what I mean. We\u2019ve got a game plan. Can he execute the game plan? I hate to pare it down to that but that\u2019s really the truth. I want to make sure he\u2019s healthy enough to play at a high level. Can he go operate the game plan we have in place for him?\u201d<\/p>\n

Redshirt freshman phenom Arch Manning<\/a><\/strong> has been starting in place of Ewers and has kept the Longhorns undefeated this season. But there\u2019s no question that a matchup against Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl next Saturday would represent the biggest challenge of his young career. <\/p>\n
