It\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/nil\/news\/collectives-coaches-to-converge-on-washington-d-c-over-push-for-nil-uniformity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similar cry<\/a> to what conference commissioners said last summer. Except this time around, new NCAA president <strong>Charlie Baker<\/strong> is leading the charge. <\/p>\n<p>On3 is on site and breaking down the latest happenings. <\/p>\n<h2>SEC at the Capitol, Arizona reception wrap up<\/h2>\n<p><strong>9 p.m. ET Wednesday: <\/strong>Night one on Capitol Hill has wrapped up, with plenty of chit chat among stakeholders and not the most positive takeaways. <\/p>\n<p>At the SEC at the Capitol, a few leaders could only shrug when asked how the day\u2019s meetings went. It\u2019s clear lawmakers are up to speed on what is happening at this point. There is not a learning curve any more, with staffers rushing to figure out what NIL stands for. <\/p>\n<p>That said, it\u2019s clear college athletics is on the to-do list. It also is not a priority at this moment. Many had a similar tone at the Future of College Sports reception in the Senate wing of the Capitol. Ted Cruz <\/h2>\n<p><strong>7:15 p.m. ET Wednesday:<\/strong> Texas A&amp;M athletic director Ross Bjork met with Texas Senator Ted Cruz, a source <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Pete_Nakos96\/status\/1666585054351441926?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> On3 on Wednesday night.  <\/p>\n<p>The new ranking member of the Senate Commerce Committee, many believe any NIL legislation will have to go through that committee. NCAA president Charlie Baker also recently met with the senator, according to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/2023\/06\/07\/college-football-biggest-names-d-c-talks-athlete-compensation-nil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sports Illustrated<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>U.S. Senators\u00a0<strong>Joe Manchin<\/strong>\u00a0(D-WV) and\u00a0<strong>Tommy Tuberville<\/strong>\u00a0(R-AL) have been working on a federal bill on college athletics but a bill has been yet to be introduced. <\/p>\n<p>Ken Cedeno-Pool\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Could the SEC create its own NIL guidelines?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>5:30 p.m. ET Wednesday<\/strong> \u2013 While meeting with the media on Wednesday, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/college\/arizona-wildcats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Arizona<\/a><\/strong> president <strong>Robert Robbins<\/strong> stressed his belief that federal aid is needed with NIL reform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think for a holistic comprehensive solution, it\u2019s probably going to have to be the U.S. Congress,\u201d Robbins said. \u201cYou have this patchwork of state legislation. I\u2019m sure (SEC Commissioner) <strong>Greg Sankey<\/strong> will talk about this tomorrow because even in the SEC footprint you have different states with different laws. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a level playing field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robbins pointed out there would be advantages to having federal NIL oversight, compared to what the NCAA is trying to formulate and enforce now with its interim policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt depends on what they come up with,\u201d Robbins said. \u201cI had not paid as much attention to the idea that there may be a federal agency for oversight of college sports. The advantage of that would be that they would have subpoena power and enforcement power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robbins was also asked about the discussion that Sankey could get legislators and college leaders in the SEC footprint to abide by the same set of NIL guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like the idea,\u201d Robbins said. \u201cIf anybody can do it, he probably can do it. It\u2019s like running a 4.3 (40-yard-dash) in water. It\u2019s going to be a big lift.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Hunter Yurachek on NIL impact<\/h2>\n<p><strong>4:45 p.m. ET Wednesday<\/strong> \u2014 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/college\/arkansas-razorbacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arkansas<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0athletic director\u00a0<strong>Hunter Yurachek<\/strong> was among the group of SEC officials to make the trip to D.C. this week. <\/p>\n<p>For many athletic directors, the last two years have been a blur. Name, image and likeness has created a new norm across college athletics. And that\u2019s not to everyone\u2019s liking. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the impacts NIL has brought to Arkansas, Yurachek made mentioned of not as many athletes leaving for the professional ranks, which appeared to be a different take on the matter. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoung men and women are making decisions not to go to Major League Baseball or the WNBA or the NBA because they can make more money in college,\u201d Yurachek said,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arkansasonline.com\/news\/2023\/jun\/07\/yurachek-to-speak-with-congressmen\/?utm_source=NIL+Newsstand&amp;utm_campaign=5b5247b9bc-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2021_10_20_01_28_COPY_01&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_a479a5b849-5b5247b9bc-557125429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">via the\u00a0<em>Arkansas Democrat-Gazette\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0Matt Jones<\/a>. \u201cDoes that make any sense, that you can make more money by staying in college than you can by going and being a professional athlete? That\u2019s where we have some issues in college athletics.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Sen. Tommy Tuberville meets with Auburn officials, talks need to protect players<\/h2>\n<p><strong>3 p.m. ET Wednesday<\/strong> \u2013 U.S. Senators\u00a0<strong>Joe Manchin<\/strong>\u00a0(D-WV) and\u00a0<strong>Tommy Tuberville<\/strong>\u00a0(R-AL) have been working on a bill that could garner bipartisan support in the Senate. While the bill has yet to be introduced, the two Senators have spent over a year talking with administrators, coaches and collectives.<\/p>\n<p>If the bill is narrow enough and does not include any language surrounding athletes not classified as employees of institutions, it could gain momentum. Tuberville <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenTuberville\/status\/1666521778754146308\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">met<\/a> with a delegation from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/auburnlive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Auburn<\/a><\/strong> on Wednesday in his offices. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday we are meeting with coaches, athletic directors and administrators from several different conferences here in Washington, D.C., talking about the disastrous new NIL rules,\u201d he said in a video released by his office. \u201cAnd they are a disaster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026 \u201cSo we\u2019ll meet up here this week. We\u2019ll have some discussions. We have a text of a bill already finished. We\u2019re going to make improvements (to) it. Bob Latta<\/h2>\n<p><strong>12:45 p.m. ET Wednesday<\/strong> \u2013 Mid-American Conference commissioner Jon Steinbrecher is in town for a couple days. He is slated to speak at Thursday\u2019s Future of College Sports summit as a panelist. During the day Wednesday, he met with Ohio Rep. Bob Latta to chat NIL, the transfer portal and athlete welfare. <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"QBI53lwRO2CvdT9LoV0pcAGhtbk\">\n<p>Commissioner Steinbrecher meets with Congressman <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/boblatta?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@boblatta<\/a> in Washington, DC to discuss issues around intercollegiate athletics (NIL, transfers, student-athlete welfare). The\u00a0<strong>SEC\u00a0<\/strong>is sending a\u00a0delegation up to Washington, D.C., this week to meet with lawmakers in the conference\u2019s footprint. Commissioner\u00a0<strong>Greg Sankey<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/alabama-crimson-tide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alabama<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0head coach\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/db\/coach\/nick-saban-133646\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nick Saban<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0are leading the effort.<\/p>\n<p>All of this, however, could be another fruitless effort. The\u00a0<strong>NCAA\u00a0<\/strong>has been lobbying for a bill that includes antitrust protections, a uniform NIL standard and language that would ensure athletes are not employees of their schools.<\/p>\n<p>Saban is scheduled to meet with Majority Leader\u00a0<strong>Steve Scalise<\/strong>, according to\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RossDellenger\/status\/1666416450955870208?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sports Illustrated<\/strong><\/a><\/em>. Each school\u2019s convoy will meet with its state delegation. There will be crossover, too.
