The latest reports out of the Atlantic Coast Conference<\/a> suggest the disputes between them, Florida State<\/a><\/strong>, and Clemson<\/a><\/strong> could come to an end. However, On3\u2019s Andy Staples<\/a> sees this as much more a win for the Seminoles<\/a> and Tigers than for the ACC.<\/p>\n

Staples made that point during the discussion of the topic on \u2018Andy & Ari On3\u2019 on Thursday<\/a>. He prefaced by saying a lot still has to happen before this gets official approval around the league. However, if or when it does, he thinks it\u2019s great for Florida State and Clemson as it would put them out on the market at a prime time. That\u2019d specifically be in reference to if that lined up with the media rights deal in the Big Ten. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf this goes through \u2013 and we don\u2019t yet know if this is going to go through,\u201d said Staples. \u201cThis is something that the ACC presidents are reviewing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s funny because I saw a lot of reaction as the news was coming out, like, \u2018Oh, see, Florida State whined and didn\u2019t get it\u2019s way!\u2019. No, Florida State and Clemson won. Like, they won,\u201d Staples said. \u201cThey\u2019re going to get more money and they\u2019re going to get out and be free agents when it is most advantageous for them to be free agents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Per reports, the plan shared within the conference<\/a> would shorten their grant of rights and shift how revenue distribution would go amongst the members. The money would be handled through \u2018media value metrics\u2019 in the league from there on out. The grant of rights would then end before the date that it\u2019s currently signed for in 2036.<\/p>\n

If accepted, it might be what ends the current lawsuits between the ACC, Florida State, and Clemson. However, that depends on what those two schools have been wanting to get out of these all along.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about money for them,\u201d said Staples. \u201cLike, maybe for Florida State, it\u2019s more personal. But it\u2019s about the gap between the SEC<\/a> and Big Ten<\/a> and the ACC<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason why I brought that up is because Florida State has made it personal,\u201d said On3\u2019s Ari Wasserman<\/a>. \u201cSo, it\u2019s, like, I don\u2019t know if Florida State can exist in a world where they\u2019re getting paid 90% of what the other teams are getting in the big conferences or if not being a part of the big conference and having that patch on their jersey matters to them a lot too.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for the ACC, Staples believes that they\u2019re doing what they can with what they have in front of them. It\u2019s probably not best for the conference in the present but could allow for them to find a future.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ACC didn\u2019t win here,\u201d said Staples. \u201cThe ACC did what the ACC had to do to try to prolong itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLike, even if things aren\u2019t ideal, you have to come up with ideas to give yourself the best chance. That\u2019s what the ACC did. Like, it gave itself the best chance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nothing is final yet at all in regards to this news out of the ACC this week. Still, if or once it is, it\u2019d be a significant shift for what comes next for that conference, especially for that pair of member programs. <\/p>\n
