It’s time to dive into the top tweets and stories about the Nittany Lions and college athletics on Friday.

Penn State tweets of the day

The U.S. National team for non-Olympic weights will be set this weekend in Omaha, Neb. Winners in each classification will then go to the non-Olympic World Championships in Tirana, Albania October 28-31. At least four Penn State connections are vying for a spot on the team this weekend. Going in weight order, Class of 2025 commit PJ Duke is first. Fresh off earning a 70-kilogram (154 pounds) silver medal at U20 Worlds, he now moves up to senior-level competition.

Next up is reigning 157-pound NCAA champ Levi Haines. Notably, he is entered for this competition at 79 kilograms, which equates to 174 pounds. Does it mean the junior will try to move up and claim Carter Starocci’s old spot in the Penn State lineup this winter? Time will tell, as it is important to note that there is no weight class at this tournament equivalent to 165 pounds, which is also a possibility. But, it’s interesting nonetheless as the tea leaves continue to suggest that he will move up in weight this year.

Last but not least among current ties, Connor Mirasola is in at 92 kilograms (202.8 pounds). He is fighting for an upperweight spot in the Lions’ lineup this fall.

Additionally, one past tie, former Lions star and current Oklahoma State coach David Taylor, is in at 92 kilograms. He will be the No. 1 seed as long as he weighs in.

The non-Olympic weight U.S. Senior Team Trials start Saturday and run through Sunday. The finals follow a best 2 out of 3 format on the tournament’s second day.

World Team Trials preseeds are out! So I was legit worried about Max when he came in. But I have my notes sitting here. I’m not worried one bit about that guy. He is an outstanding young man across the board. I am super thrilled to have him as part of the program. I think he’s going to have a big future. He works great, works his tail off, gained respect from his teammates, and I’m really excited.
