With Auburn\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> opener<\/a> just a few days away, Hugh Freeze<\/a> has an idea of where their kicking game will be in relation to the status of Alex McPherson<\/a><\/p>\n

During his press conference<\/a> on Monday<\/a>, Freeze spoke about the Tigers\u2019 plans at kicker against<\/a> Alabama A&M<\/a><\/strong>. While McPherson is much improved from his health matter over the last few weeks, even to the extent of him kicking some last week, Freeze still does not expect him to be ready for the game this weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlex is much better. He\u2019s much better and he\u2019s getting better,\u201d said Freeze. \u201cI don\u2019t think he will be ready to go but don\u2019t hold me to that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAlex did kick a little bit last Thursday,\u201d Freeze said. \u201cI don\u2019t think he will be \u2013 I don\u2019t think he\u2019ll be quite ready this Saturday.\u201d<\/p>\n

McPherson dealt with a hamstring injury<\/a> back in the spring. Since around the start of July, though, a health matter<\/a> involving his gastrointestinal system has been what has sidelined him for the remainder of the summer and during fall camp<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is worth keeping an eye on with how efficient McPherson was last season as a redshirt freshman. He made every single one of his kicks last year with 13 field goals and 40 extra points. That made him a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n

However, with McPherson trending towards being out, Towns McGough<\/a>, a hometown true freshman, would be the starter against the Bulldogs. This comes after he was MVP at A-Day in the spring with him making all seven of his field goals<\/a>, including a game-winner from 58 yards out.<\/p>\n

\u201cTowns is just prepared and ready to go, has had a really good week last week,\u201d said Freeze.<\/p>\n

With the release<\/a> of Auburn\u2019s depth chart<\/a> on Monday, McPherson was still the starting kicker on special teams. Even so, while Freeze didn\u2019t completely rule it out, a return for him on Saturday doesn\u2019t sound likely, especially with a capable young player ready behind him.<\/p>\n

McPherson appears close but not close enough to be back in time for kickoff at Auburn. That turns Freeze\u2019s attention to McGough for the time being in regards to the placekicker for the Tigers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s where I think it\u2019s headed,\u201d said Freeze.<\/p>\n
