Going into his first season as the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines<\/a><\/strong>, Sherrone Moore<\/a><\/strong> inherited a team dealing with plenty of turnover. That included turnover at the quarterback position and an eventual battle to become the starter. <\/p>\n

Now, with the first game of the season around the corner, Moore shared that Michigan is getting close to naming a starting quarterback and he thinks the team is in a good place.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re close,\u201d Sherrone Moore said<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ll figure that out soon, though. We\u2019re in a good place.\u201d<\/p>\n

At this point, Alex Orji<\/a><\/strong> and Davis Warren<\/a><\/strong> are the two quarterbacks competing for the starting job. For now, the two of them are sharing reps in practice according to Sherrone Moore and they\u2019ll be told who ears the job some point ahead of the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, we\u2019ll just see who practices better these next couple days, and then we\u2019ll make a decision whether it\u2019s Friday, whether it\u2019s right before the game,\u201d Moore said. \u201cWe\u2019ll let them know, and then everybody else will find out at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sherrone Moore wasn\u2019t willing to share if he\u2019d consider any kind of mid-game quarterback rotation or share his thoughts on that kind of system. However, he did make it clear that he believes it can work under the right circumstances. <\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I\u2019ve been a part of it. I\u2019ve been a part of it here. I\u2019ve seen it work. I\u2019ve seen it not work. So, we\u2019re just going to do whatever it takes to win. I don\u2019t think there\u2019s really a yes or no, or what\u2019s better, what\u2019s not. You go back to the years of Tim Tebow<\/a><\/strong> and Chris Leak<\/a><\/strong>. It worked out pretty well for them,\u201d Moore said. \u201cBut there\u2019s teams that have done it and haven\u2019t worked out well, so we\u2019ll just figure out what\u2019s our best formula to win.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alex Orji is a former four-star recruit in the 2022 cycle<\/a> and a phenomenal athlete. He got some playing time last season, playing in six games primarily as a rushing threat. Meanwhile, Davis Warren made three appearances last season for Michigan in mop-up duty. Now, it\u2019s been fairly even for the two in terms of the reps they\u2019re sharing. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been pretty even,\u201d Moore said. \u201cThey\u2019ve done a really good job of it. It\u2019s been even snaps throughout. Maybe it\u2019s one with him, one with the next guy. It\u2019s been an even distribution. Those guys have done an outstanding job and obviously made it very hard for us to make a decision right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

While plenty of people might have assumed that Alex Orji would win the starting job, Sherrone Moore isn\u2019t surprised that Davis Warren has made this such a tough competition. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf you know Davis Warren, if you know him on a personal level and what he\u2019s been through, that kid\u2019s a fighter,\u201d Moore said. \u201cSo, you knew it was not just going to be given to anybody. He had to go earn it and he\u2019s earned the opportunity to, you know, compete for it, and that\u2019s what he\u2019s been doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sherrone Moore will need to decide on a starting quarterback relatively soon. Michigan opens the season against Fresno State<\/a><\/strong> on August 31st. <\/p>\n
