In two years as Mike Leach\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> starting quarterback at Mississippi State<\/a><\/strong>, Will Rogers<\/a><\/strong> flourished in the Air Raid offense. He threw for 4,739 yards in 2021 and 3,974 in 2022 while averaging nearly 647 passing attempts over those two seasons.<\/p>\n

Following Leach\u2019s sudden death, Rogers had to adjust to a pro-style scheme in less than a season under Zach Arnett<\/a><\/strong> in 2023. He then entered the transfer portal<\/a><\/strong> and committed to Washington<\/a><\/strong>, where he stuck around after Jedd Fisch<\/a><\/strong> took over for Kalen DeBoer<\/a><\/strong>. It will once again be a pro-style system, but Fisch made one thing clear at Big Ten Media Days: The Huskies will throw the ball.<\/p>\n

The scheme won\u2019t be the Air Raid, though. That\u2019s why Fisch said Rogers will have some adjustments to make \u2013 particularly when it comes to play-action.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t throw it the same way. We\u2019re not really Air Raid,\u201d Fisch said in Indianapolis. \u201cWe have, probably, more under center, play-actions, some of the things that they don\u2019t do over there. He\u2019s gonna have to learn how to turn his back to the defense and flip his head around. That\u2019s a little bit unique for guys that played in that Air Raid. The third-down package, the drop-back package.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Will\u2019s ability to just throw the ball 50 times a game, we\u2019re not gonna do that. We\u2019ll throw it about 38 times a game, 40 times a game, max. Hopefully less. We\u2019d love to be about a 32-run, 38-pass team. We\u2019ll see if that fits him. But I think it will.\u201d<\/p>\n

That ratio is similar to what Fisch did at Arizona<\/a><\/strong> last season with Noah Fifita<\/a><\/strong> and Jayden de Laura<\/a><\/strong> at quarterback. The Wildcats averaged 35.7 pass attempts and 30.6 rush attempts en route to a 10-3 record. Aspects of that West Coast-style are sure to follow Fisch to Washington as he takes over, in his words, \u201ca brand new team<\/a><\/strong>\u201d after DeBoer\u2019s departure.<\/p>\n

Rogers is sure to be the focal point, bringing plenty of experience to the quarterback position. But when it comes to how many times he has to throw, Fisch said he hopes it doesn\u2019t reach the numbers from Mississippi State. However, in college football, nothing is a certainty.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, he\u2019s certainly done that,\u201d Fisch said when asked about Rogers\u2019 volume of pass attempts. \u201cThrowing the ball is not an issue for Will.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis arm is one that\u2019s accustomed to a lot of attempts. I don\u2019t think we\u2019ll have to attempt it that much. I would hope we don\u2019t attempt it that much, but you never know.\u201d<\/p>\n
