Rumors abound the actual reason was a high-speed chase Marshall allegedly took the police on \u2014 in a car he purchased with some of his NIL (name, image and likeness) money.<\/p>\n<p>It was the final straw in what sources indicate had been an ongoing pattern of troubling off-field behavior for Marshall. In short, the dismissal wasn\u2019t all that surprising. <\/p>\n<p>But in the age of NIL and the unprecedented resources (read: $$$) being allocated for talent procurement, the limited leash for Marshall was\/is still noteworthy.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/ole-miss-rebels\/news\/analysis-what-to-make-of-ole-miss-abrupt-dismissal-of-chris-marshall\/\">RELATED: What to make of Ole Miss\u2019 abrupt dismissal of Chris Marshall<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now-former Ole Miss wide receiver Chris Marshall<\/p>\n<h2>See, Marshall had agreed to terms on a fairly lucrative NIL contract with the Grove Collective. <\/h2>\n<p>The Grove Collective is the school\u2019s leading NIL avenue. Marshall, meanwhile, is a former five-star prospect. He was ranked as the No. 3 overall wide receiver in the 2020 recruiting class. Marshall had 11 receptions for 108 yards in six games as a Texas A&amp;M freshman in 2022. <\/p>\n<p>However, he had his issues in College Station, too. Marshall was\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/college\/texas-am-aggies\/news\/texas-am-aggies-to-be-without-evan-stewart-multiple-other-contributors-against-miami-hurricanes-chris-marshall-sec-college-football-jimbo-fisher-aggies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of four freshmen suspended for a game<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for a violation of team rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChris Marshall has been dismissed from the Ole Miss football program for violation of team rules,\u201d now-fourth-year head coach Lane Kiffin <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpiritBen\/status\/1654912204645302278?s=20\">said in a statement<\/a><\/strong> at the time. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wish him good luck in his future plans.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Ole Miss nearly had a replacement for Marshall in Michigan State transfer Keon Coleman. <\/h2>\n<p>Coleman, though, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/ole-miss-rebels\/news\/transcript-the-ole-miss-spirits-all-day-ama-ask-me-anything-3\/\">ultimately went with Florida State<\/a><\/strong>, despite near-identical NIL offers, meaning an unexpected need remains. Fortunately, the Rebels, and the Grove Collective under executive director Walker Jones, have proven time and again they have more than enough money and are willing to spend. <\/p>\n<p>To a point. <\/p>\n<p>First and foremost, Jones is charged with protecting the school\u2019s interests, including in such adverse instances as Marshall\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we have to write the biggest check every time, No. 1, we\u2019re being completely wasteful with the money. But that doesn&#8217;t always mean the biggest check. by Talk of Champions<\/a><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<h2>OK, but what about the guaranteed money? <\/h2>\n<p>Jones covered the topic (among many others) at length in the latest edition of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/talk-of-champions\/id1200831830\">Talk of Champions<\/a><\/strong>. He also detailed where the Rebels stand nationally in NIL fundraising, the collective\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/nil\/news\/the-brandr-group-hyperluxe-strike-partnership-with-ole-miss-rebels-grove-collective\/\">eSports partnership<\/a><\/strong> with The Brandr Group\/Hyperluxe and much, much more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s an example of why we pay over a 12-month period and don\u2019t front-load these agreements,\u201d Jones said. \u201cThere\u2019s risk there, and I\u2019m a big believer in the student-athlete earning their value over time. They have responsibilities throughout the year, and not just when they\u2019re playing. Just as importantly when they\u2019re not playing and they\u2019re representing the Grove Collective or our university in the various functions we have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very cautious about putting a bunch of money up front, and we\u2019ve also gotten much more sophisticated in our contractual agreements where we\u2019re protected.
