After ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski sent shockwaves<\/strong><\/a> through both the professional and collegiate ranks, reporting that the Los Angeles Lakers are in hot pursuit<\/strong><\/a> of University of Connecticut<\/strong><\/a> head coach Dan Hurley<\/a><\/strong>, conversations pivoted towards his possible replacement. While plenty believe that the Huskies will look to make a splash at head coach should Hurley part for the Lakers, college basketball insider Jeff Borzello believes their coaching candidate will be closer to home.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe likelihood would be that they would go for some continuity and promote from within,\u201d said Borzello. \u201cNow, whether that\u2019s Luke Murray, I think, perhaps, the more likely option would be Kimani Young. He\u2019s been the associate head coach, been under Dan since Dan got to UConn in 2018.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd Hurley has mentioned both Luke Murray<\/a><\/strong> and Kimani Young<\/a><\/strong> endlessly in press conferences\u2014 how they\u2019re rising stars, rising head coaches, complimented both for their game planning, their recruiting. So, I think he has kind of planted the seeds for one of them to eventually take over; I don\u2019t think anyone thought it would be in 2024. But, I think that UConn would lean toward the continuity angle and promote from within.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both Murray and Young were a part of the Huskies\u2019 back-to-back national championships in 2023 and 2024. However, as Borzello mentioned, Young has been by Hurley\u2019s side since the two came together in 2018. The former UTEP point guard was appointed to the position of assistant head coach in 2020 and has since held on to the title.<\/p>\n

Given how highly Hurley has spoken about his two assistant coaches, either one could be in line position if he decides to head to the NBA. It is worth noting that should either one of them take over as the UConn head coach; it would be their first head coaching opportunity.<\/p>\n

College basketball insider tabs Auburn\u2019s Bruce Pearl as \u2018only name\u2019 to replace Dan Hurley at UConn<\/h2>\n

Bruce Pearl<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is the \u201conly name\u201d to replace Dan Hurley at\u00a0UConn<\/strong>\u00a0if the latter\u00a0leaves for the Los Angeles Lakers<\/a>,\u00a0according to The Field of 68\u2019s Jeff Goodman<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Auburn<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0head coach has been highly successful throughout his career. As Goodman pointed out, it would be a logical transition for the two-time defending national champions.<\/p>\n

Goodman even went as far as to call Pearl a \u201cno brainer,\u201d compared to elevating assistants.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only name, here\u2019s the only name I would go after, there\u2019s one,\u201d Goodman said on his podcast. \u201cIf I was David Benedict, I would take that swing at, you know who it is? Bruce Pearl. That\u2019s the only one for me. He\u2019s from Sharon, Massachusetts. He\u2019s down in Auburn now. He\u2019s done an unbelievable job.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s been successful everywhere he\u2019s been. He\u2019s got the personality to match Hurley. If there\u2019s anybody that could keep that fan base riled up to the level that Hurley has riled him up and gotten him going over the last couple of years, it is Bruce Pearl. So if I\u2019m Dave Benedict, that\u2019s the only name that\u2019s the only name I call.\u201d<\/p>\n
