North Carolina Tar Heels<\/a><\/strong> head baseball coach Scott Forbes<\/a><\/strong> raved over how the bottom of the team\u2019s lineup has performed in the Chapel Hill Regional.<\/p>\n

One of the key things that Forbes explained the bottom of UNC\u2019s lineup does for the team is it lengthens the lineup. That means that there\u2019s no easy at-bats for opposing pitchers. On top of that, how the lineup is structured is a challenge to manage against. <\/p>\n

\u201cI mean that\u2019s why our lineup is so good,\u201d Scott Forbes said<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve got speed distributed, power distributed, right, left, right, left throughout, and that can be hard.\u00a0 I was a pitching coach for a long time. It\u2019s hard to make decisions pitching-wise when it\u2019s lefty and then righty.\u201d <\/p>\n

In UNC\u2019s final game of the Chapel Hill Regional against LSU<\/a><\/strong>, Forbes went with third baseman Gavin Gallaher<\/strong>, second baseman Alex Madera<\/strong>, and shortstop Colby Wilkerson<\/strong> in the seven, eight, and nine holes respectively. Together, they combined to go four for 11 at the plate, with two RBIs, two walks, and a run scored. <\/p>\n

\u201cThese two guys \u2013\u00a0I have a soft spot for a division three guy [Madera] \u2013\u00a0 and then Colby Wilkerson. Coach [Jesse] Wierzbicki<\/strong> found him first and said, \u2018I really think this kid can play shortstop.\u2019 I went to watch him and Colby will tell you a lot of people told him he was probably never gonna play at UNC when he came here, and that\u2019s what makes college baseball so awesome,\u201d Forbes said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese guys have been really good for us all year. They\u2019ve done a really good job of lengthening the order and getting on for [Vance] Honeycutt<\/a><\/strong>, [Casey] Cook<\/a><\/strong>, [Parks] Harber<\/strong>, [Anthony] Donofrio<\/strong>, and all those guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, UNC is looking to continue to get production from that group in the Super Regional against West Virginia<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Scott Forbes praised UNC\u2019s middle infield<\/h2>\n

The bottom two hitters in UNC\u2019s order, Alex Madera and Colby Wilkerson, also make up the middle of the infield. There, Scott Forbes believes their defense is their true strength.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese guys and the whole infield defense\u2026 Our first team meeting every fall until I tell guys you can\u2019t win a championship if you don\u2019t pitch and defend. You can\u2019t do it. You can\u2019t hit your way to Omaha, it\u2019s just not gonna happen. These guys are completely bought into that, they\u2019re fundamental and we work on it every single day. They take pride in the ground balls,\u201d Forbes said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were happy we got to hit on the field today. We said, \u2018Hey, we\u2019re gonna do what we\u2019ve been doing all year.\u2019 Set those machines up. Take those ground balls. I\u2019ve been here a long time and these guys they\u2019re as good of a middle infield as we\u2019ve ever had here.\u201d<\/p>\n
