*** On300 Kissimmee (Fla.) Osceola linebacker Elijah Melendez<\/a><\/strong> told me that he probably won\u2019t be making it in for his scheduled official visit with Michigan this weekend. The reason behind that is a travel conflict with his parents. If Melendez visited Michigan as planned, his parents would be unable to make the trip. Obviously, official visits are crucial, and Melendez wants to make sure his family can get a closer look at the Michigan program and meet with the staff. Melendez told me that he is looking to reschedule his official visit for the fall. That means Melendez would get to take in a game at The Big House. There are plenty of marquee matchups to choose from \u2014 Texas, USC and Oregon are all great options. <\/p>\n

*** So is Michigan truly still in this race? Melendez told me this: \u201cI still feel the exact same about Michigan.\u201d That is obviously encouraging. Melendez gave Miami a verbal commitment earlier this offseason but has maintained high interest in the Wolverines. Both defensive coordinator Wink Martindale and linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary went down to see him during the contact period and have developed great relationships with him. Melendez also knows a few members of the team, including star defensive lineman Kenneth Grant. Both are from the Gary, Indiana area. Overall, Melendez has talked about the relationships, culture and development at Michigan, and that\u2019s keeping the Wolverines in this one. Melendez just made an OV to Auburn over the weekend and is still slated to see Oklahoma next weekend (his parents won\u2019t make that one, either). Miami is scheduled to get his final summer OV. <\/p>\n

*** Here is what Melendez said about his recent visit from Martindale and Jean-Mary: \u201cThe visit with Coach BJ and Coach Wink went really well. They just wanted me to know that I was a priority. They really love me. Having the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach come out shows the love. They said they need me and want me on their team\u2026. Coach BJ is a really great guy. We\u2019ve been talking since he was at Tennessee. We click really well. We\u2019re always on the phone with each other. We have a really strong relationship. He gives me good tips all the time. A lot of people think Coach Wink is an old, grumpy guy. But he\u2019s really an old, funny guy (laughs). He\u2019s a really good coach and a really good dude. We always get on the phone as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

*** Obviously, NIL has been discussed as a potential roadblock for Michigan in its efforts to flip Melendez. However, he said this about the situation: \u201cI don\u2019t want (NIL) to weigh in my decision, to be honest. If it\u2019s a big difference to where it might affect me, then it might weight in. But at the end of the day, it\u2019s all about getting to the NFL and development. I want to get to the second contract, which Michigan is all about. They are all about business and never changing the culture. They don\u2019t meat ride anybody and throw out money. They talk about development and football.\u201d<\/p>\n
