Former Notre Dame running back Logan Diggs<\/a><\/strong> is headed south. Diggs announced his commitment to LSU on Tuesday. <\/p>\n

Diggs, a Louisiana native, entered the transfer portal on April 27, just five days after Notre Dame\u2019s Blue-Gold Game marked the conclusion of the spring practice schedule. He did not play in the Irish\u2019s spring game. He nursed a lower-body injury for most of the spring. <\/p>\n

Sophomore Gi\u2019Bran Payne<\/a><\/strong> looked good as Notre Dame\u2019s No. 2 running back in Diggs\u2019 absence, but that was likely not why Diggs decided to leave South Bend after two strong seasons. He probably views himself as a true lead back, and he wasn\u2019t ever going to be one at Notre Dame for as long as Audric Estim\u00e9<\/a><\/strong> stays healthy. Estim\u00e9 had an outstanding spring while Diggs stood on the sideline. He might\u2019ve moved his title from 1A\/B to an outright No. 1. <\/p>\n

Diggs can do the same by moving on from Notre Dame to LSU, where he will team up with former Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Diggs (165) had more carries than Estim\u00e9 (156) in 2022, but Estim\u00e9 was more efficient in averaging 5.9 yards per tote to Diggs\u2019 5.0. Diggs was slightly better in the passing game, catching 10 throws for 211 yards and 2 touchdowns to Estim\u00e9\u2019s 9 receptions for 135 yards and 1 score. <\/p>\n

In his two seasons at Notre Dame, Diggs carried 217 times for 1,052 yards and 7 touchdowns. He caught 16 passes for 267 yards and 3 TDs. Estim\u00e9 was not used nearly as much as a freshman. He has 162 career carries for 980 yards and 11 rushing scores. He didn\u2019t catch a pass in 2021. <\/p>\n

Notre Dame had something special in the one-two punch of Estim\u00e9 and Diggs. Now the Irish will have to find something of a sidekick in a player who has not proven himself at the college level. There are 2 carries for 5 yards spread across the stat lines of Payne, sophomore Jadarian Price<\/a><\/strong> and incoming freshman Jeremiyah Love<\/a><\/strong>. Both numbers belong to Payne. <\/p>\n

Price is coming back from an Achilles injury that kept him off the field for the entirety of his freshman season. He did not practice in the spring, either. He was still in rehab. Love, meanwhile, has not gone through a single college practice. He\u2019ll enroll at Notre Dame this summer as one of the most highly-ranked recruits in the Irish\u2019s class of 2023. <\/p>\n

Diggs arrived in South Bend as the 18th-ranked recruit in the Irish\u2019s class of 2021. Estim\u00e9 was No. 8. Diggs is one of 14 players from the list of 27 class of 2021 commits who no longer plays at Notre Dame<\/a><\/strong> because of a transfer portal entry or medical retirement. <\/p>\n
