{"id":51314,"date":"2024-05-11T14:50:20","date_gmt":"2024-05-11T19:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/demo.wztzfm.com\/wp\/?p=51314"},"modified":"2024-05-11T14:50:20","modified_gmt":"2024-05-11T19:50:20","slug":"michael-penix-jr-has-goal-of-being-unselfish-teammate-alongside-kirk-cousins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/demo.wztzfm.com\/wp\/michael-penix-jr-has-goal-of-being-unselfish-teammate-alongside-kirk-cousins\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Penix Jr. has goal of being \u2018unselfish teammate\u2019 alongside Kirk Cousins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/db\/michael-penix-jr-88185\/\">Michael Penix Jr.<\/a><\/strong> went off the board at No. 8 overall to the Falcons, the immediate question was what\u2019s the deal with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/db\/kirk-cousins-75337\/\">Kirk Cousins<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Well, the former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/college\/washington-huskies\/\"><strong>Washington<\/strong><\/a> quarterback is ready to be \u201cunselfish,\u201d learn and develop behind Cousins and get acclimated to the NFL. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JFowlerESPN\">ESPN\u2019s Jeremy Fowler<\/a> reported the potential was too good to pass up after scouting him for so long.<\/p>\n<p>The Falcons are ready to play the long game with Penix Jr.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI talked to Michael Penix and I asked him, how do you balance that because you want to play, you\u2019re a competitor, but you know that your situation, you\u2019re going to have to wait,\u201d Fowler said on <em>SportsCenter<\/em>. \u201cHe said \u2018My goal is just to be an unselfish teammate. I\u2019m not worried about when I\u2019m playing. If I maximize my potential, all that stuff will get worked out.\u2019 He said he\u2019s a big fisherman. He hopes to fish with his new teammate Kirk Cousins \u2026\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo this is a player who embraces the spotlight though \u2026 And hey, Coach Raheem Morris made no mistake about it. He said, \u2018Look, we\u2019ve been scouting this guy for a while even when we signed Kirk Cousins. We knew we were high on Michael Penix. We still had to do a lot of recon work\u2019 \u2026 But this is a guy that\u2019s a ceiling play for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of his college career, Penix Jr. lit it up with 13,741 yards, 96 touchdowns, 34 interceptions and a 63.3% completion percentage.<\/p>\n<p>Falcons coach Raheem Morris noted the Rams example with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/db\/matthew-stafford-86239\/\">Matthew Stafford\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> availability and health, as it relates to Cousins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, Morris said \u2018look when we were in LA,\u2019 when he was the defensive coordinator, \u2018when we had Matthew Stafford we were making the playoffs and winning Super Bowls,\u2019\u201d Fowler said. \u201c\u2018When we didn\u2019t. We weren\u2019t in the playoffs.\u2019 You gotta take that shot at that position for the short term and the long term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot said the team had the future in mind when making the decision to draft Penix, emphasizing that Cousins is their quarterback for the short-term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKirk Cousins is our quarterback,\u201d Fontenot said. \u201cWe\u2019re very excited about Kirk. We\u2019re very excited about this team. Michael Penix is\u2026 we\u2019re talking about the future. You look at the future. You look at the big picture. We are very excited about that quarterback room, and again, Kirk is our quarterback.
