For all intents and purposes, Joe Strickland\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> career begins now.<\/p>\n

He arrived in January 2022 as a touted four-star prospect, freshly minted after a Class 3A runner-up finish with Brebeuf Jesuit in Indianapolis. But Strickland never got on track after battling mono early on last season and he redshirted.<\/p>\n

Now, the 6-4, 265-pound Indianapolis native is revving up again under a new staff and in a new scheme. How difficult has it been to pick up a scheme that features a five-man front?<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, it\u2019s pretty quick, honestly,\u201d said Strickland. \u201cI learned it in like a day. So, it\u2019s simple. But, at the same time, the offense, they don\u2019t know what we\u2019re doing. But, I mean, I know basically the whole d-line because I was with (OLB) Coach (Joe) Dineen<\/a><\/strong> at first. Now, I\u2019m with Coach Brick (Haley)<\/a><\/strong>. So, yeah, I mean, it\u2019s going good right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s correct: Strickland initially was working with the outside linebackers, who in this scheme flank the line. But he has since shifted back to end, a comfort zone for Strickland.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know the whole entire d-line from Fox to Buck (the OLB spots), interior.\u201d said Strickland.<\/p>\n

What has Strickland learned since he got to West Lafayette over a year ago?<\/p>\n

\u201cI say it\u2019s a lot of things,\u201d he said. \u201cI mean, I\u2019ve been working at everything after practice every day. Got Coach \u2018Ro (strength coach Kiero Small<\/strong>) now, getting stronger. I mean, those are really the key things.\u201d<\/p>\n

This scheme being installed by coordinator Kevin Kane<\/a><\/strong> is designed to get each player across the front in a one-on-one block \u2026 then, beat their man.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, you see Nic (Caraway) <\/a><\/strong>out there and getting sacks left and right,\u201d said Strickland. \u201cSame thing with Khordae (Sydnor)<\/a><\/strong>. Even Will (Heldt)<\/a><\/strong>, he\u2019s an early enrollee. That\u2019s just the edges. I mean, even on the interior. If you watched a whole practice \u2026 you see everybody\u2019s getting back there. There\u2019s a pressure every play, the quarterbacks always scrambling. It\u2019s exciting, for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kane has been happy through the first few weeks of spring drills.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think guys are doing great,\u201d he said. \u201cI think once they\u2019ve understood what their role is in this package, and kind of accepted, \u2018alright this is what we\u2019re doing, this is how we\u2019re doing it.\u2019 And as long as you tell them why, I think guys are grasping it. <\/p>\n

\u201cBy and large, guys are playing fast and having fun with the new scheme.\u201d<\/p>\n
