Castillo has been a member of the USA Basketball U16 and U17 teams over the past two summers, helping each team go undefeated and win a gold medal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m an all-around point guard,\u201d Castillo told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/category\/basketball-recruiting\/news\/\">On3<\/a>. \u201cI can create, shoot, do everything a point guard needs; I\u2019m vocal. I\u2019ve developed a lot with the mental side of my game. My school ball team didn\u2019t do what we wanted, and I think going through that grew my mental and my approach to the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On3 caught up with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/db\/david-castillo-150583\/\">David Castillo<\/a><\/strong> after a live viewing at the USA Basketball Junior National Team minicamp to talk recruiting.<\/p>\n<h2>Castillo breaks down visits<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve already taken official visits to <strong>Kansas<\/strong>, <strong>Oklahoma State<\/strong>, and <strong>Kansas State<\/strong>,\u201d Castillo said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kansas State<\/strong>: \u201cI talk with <em>coach (Rodney) Perry<\/em> almost every day and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kstatesports.com\/staff-directory\/jerome-tang\/1483#:~:text=Jerome%20Tang%2C%20one%20of%20the%20chief%20architects%20in,an%20announcement%20by%20Director%20of%20Athletics%20Gene%20Taylor.\">coach (Jerome) Tang<\/a> when he can; our relationship has continued to grow since the visit. For them to call and continue to recruit me, no matter how busy they are, is a continued blessing. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/db\/markquis-nowell-83764\/\">Markquis (Nowell)<\/a><\/strong> this year and how they used all the guys on their roster, and I think I would fit in great there. They play with a lot of freedom and a lot of joy within the game. I thought it was very special what they were able to accomplish just in one season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oklahoma State<\/strong>: \u201cJust really getting to know the coaching staff and being around them was the best part of that visit for me. I think <a href=\"https:\/\/okstate.com\/staff-directory\/mike-boynton-jr-\/323\">coach (Mike) Boynton<\/a> is a great dude. They have a mainly all black coaching staff, along with <em>coach (Keiton) Page<\/em>. It was a great family environment.<\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t do as well as they wanted to this year, but they stuck through it and stayed together; that was good to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kansas<\/strong>: \u201cI feel like I fit great with how they play. They\u2019re the winningest program in the country, so for coach (Bill) Self to say I\u2019m a priority for them is a great blessing. They play the right way, and so do I; I feel like I fit that system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allen_Fieldhouse\">Allen Fieldhouse<\/a> stood out to me on the visit. It\u2019s super loud there. The fans have so much joy and excitement for the players and for their team. It was a great feeling to see fans with such passion.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Timeframes and visits<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure what other visits I will take or the timeframe for when I will take them; I\u2019ll most likely wait until after AAU,\u201d David Castillo said. \u201cI\u2019m most likely planning on signing during the early period, so I\u2019ll probably commit during my school year. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really just a lot of calling right now with the schools who have offered, and even some schools who haven\u2019t offered. <strong>Gonzaga<\/strong>, <em>coach (Chris) Beard <\/em>at <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong>, and a couple of other schools that haven\u2019t offered are talking with me. I\u2019m really taking everything day by day right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>In Castillo\u2019s words<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI want to play for a coach that believes in me and in my skills,\u201d Castillo said. \u201cI\u2019ll also want to play for a coach I can sit down and talk with things outside of basketball. A coach I can trust on and off the court. I want to use basketball to build connections and not just take it for what it is.
