In the latest edition of On Texas Football, Bobby Burton speaks with On3\u2019s JD PicKell for a national perspective on the Longhorns and their 2023 expectations.<\/p>\n

PicKell, who is a consistent presence on On3\u2019s YouTube channel<\/a> and a former college football player at Cornell and Baylor, has high hopes for the Longhorns in 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you look at Texas, it really feels like this year it has built to this year being the year,\u201d PicKell said.<\/p>\n

He discusses how 2021 was focused on improving the culture, with 2022 spent on improving the roster ahead of a 2023 worth being optimistic about.<\/p>\n

Burton and PicKell talk about the 2022 season, including how the Big 12 finished. Even with TCU and Kansas State having successful seasons, the portal makes it difficult for any national voice to know for sure how the conference will play out in the upcoming year. PicKell\u2019s \u201cunofficial pecking order\u201d for the Big 12 has Texas and Oklahoma, with their roster and quarterback situations, as the two he\u2019s looking at to be at the top at this current juncture.<\/p>\n

The two then talk about some of the other teams in the conference, including Houston, BYU, Central Florida, and Cincinnati, who are heading to the Big 12 this season. PicKell mentions UCF as a team that has a good setup going forward in the Power 5 ranks. <\/p>\n

PicKell discusses his recent ranking of Texas\u2019 quarterback room as second in the Big 12 behind the room in Norman belonging for the Sooners. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason why I had Texas at No. 2 is based on the fact that Quinn Ewers has so much potential and so much excitement, but it was his first year in the saddle last year,\u201d PicKell said. We saw really good Quinn Ewers against Alabama and the second half of the bowl game. I could go down the list here and talk about the good Quinn Ewers games, but we also saw the inconsistencies where you go to Stillwater and throw 30 incompletions. With Dillon Gabriel, I feel like I know more of what I\u2019m getting.\u201d<\/p>\n
