While he\u2019s been out of the National Football League for more than two years now, former Heisman Trophy<\/a><\/strong> winner Cam Newton<\/a><\/strong> has still been adamant that he can still play, and the three-time Pro Bowler even threw some passes at Auburn\u2019s Pro Day this spring<\/a><\/strong>. On Wednesday night, Newton even dropped a video on Twitter discussing the quarterbacks in the NFL that he\u2019d love to play backup for. <\/p>\n

\u201cI know a lot of people have a lot of things to say in regards to my future in the National Football League. And I want to set the record straight by saying, \u2018This is how I feel. There ain\u2019t 32 guys that are better than me, but I also know that I could also be a backup. And I would be a backup. Players that I would backup,\u201d Netwon said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He then rattled off his list of players he\u2019d like to backup: Deshaun Watson<\/a><\/strong>, Lamar Jackson<\/a><\/strong>, Justin Fields<\/a><\/strong>, Tua Tagovailoa<\/a><\/strong>, Malik Willis<\/a><\/strong>, C.J. Stroud<\/a><\/strong>, Bryce Young<\/a><\/strong>, Anthony Richardson<\/a><\/strong>, Jalen Hurts<\/a><\/strong>, Aaron Rodgers<\/a><\/strong>, Josh Allen<\/a><\/strong>, and Sam Howell<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

While Cam Newton in his prime was an MVP caliber quarterback in the National Football League, those days are long gone. He continues to insist that there aren\u2019t 32 starting quarterbacks better than him in the NFL, but at least he\u2019s willing to take a backup role, which is one of the more humbling statements he\u2019s ever made. Maybe Newton wants the easy money. Maybe he legitimately wants the opportunity to tutor some of these young quarterbacks and share some knowledge. For whatever the reason, it sounds like he really wants to be back in the NFL. We\u2019ll see if he gets an opportunity in the near future.<\/p>\n

Of course, Newton went on to have one of the best tenures at quarterback in Carolina Panthers history. Newton has thrown for 32,382 career passing yards to go with 194 touchdowns during his 11 seasons in the league.<\/p>\n

His best season came in 2015, when he led Carolina to a 15-1 record and took them all the way to Super Bowl 50, before losing to the Peyton Manning<\/a><\/strong>-led Denver Broncos. Newton put up career numbers through the air and on the ground that season, earning him NFL MVP honors for the first and only time in his career.<\/p>\n

For now, he\u2019ll just have to play the waiting game and see if any owner wants to bring him in as a backup.<\/p>\n
