The last two years have seen plenty of transfer portal<\/a><\/strong> success stories at quarterback. Names such as Caleb Williams<\/a><\/strong> at USC<\/a>, Michael Penix Jr.<\/a><\/strong> at Washington<\/a><\/strong>, Shedeur Sanders<\/a><\/strong> at Colorado<\/a><\/strong> and Sam Hartman<\/a><\/strong> at Notre Dame<\/a><\/strong> reinvigorated their careers after entering the portal.<\/p>\n

Alabama<\/a><\/strong> head coach Nick Saban<\/a><\/strong> knows how much of an impact the portal can make at the quarterback position.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s changed the game tremendously,\u201d Saban told ESPN\u2019s Chris Low<\/strong> on Hey Coach and The Nick Saban Show<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

According to the latest Heisman Trophy odds<\/a><\/strong> released earlier this week, five of the top eight contenders transferred within the last two years. That includes Williams and Penix, who are the two favorites to win the award.<\/p>\n

But as is the case with the portal, there\u2019s also a downside. Some teams lose backups to the portal, which means they don\u2019t have as much depth at the position. Saban pointed that out, but added it\u2019s a useful resource for new coaches who are trying to put together a program.<\/p>\n

As a result, there\u2019s parity \u2014 something Saban has wanted for some time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that the really, really good teams have a more difficult time because you don\u2019t lose some of your best players, but you lose a lot of depth on your team,\u201d Saban said. \u201cSo it makes you younger and you don\u2019t have a lot of depth. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut it also gives you an opportunity, if you\u2019re building a program, to get players from another resource so you can actually rebuild a lot quicker and get to a higher level more quickly. And I think it\u2019s creating a lot more parity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some other notable examples of successful transfer quarterbacks include LSU\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> Jayden Daniels<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 who Saban specifically pointed out \u2014 and Oregon\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> Bo Nix<\/a><\/strong>. Both quarterbacks flourished last year and set themselves up for a big leap this year. But some QBs, such as DJ Uiagalelei<\/a><\/strong>, sought a change of scenery to jump-start their careers. Uiagalelei left Clemson<\/a><\/strong> and is in his first year at Oregon State<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Alabama also ventured into the portal to bring in a quarterback this season, landing former Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner<\/a><\/strong>. He got his first start with the Crimson Tide last week against USF<\/a><\/strong>, but struggled. He completed just five of 14 passes for 37 yards before Ty Simpson<\/a><\/strong> took over.<\/p>\n

Saban previously said Buchner was coming along well in the system after coming to Alabama after spring practice. He reunited with Tommy Rees<\/a><\/strong>, and ahead of the USF game, it sounded like he was starting to get more confident<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe played really well in the last scrimmage and he\u2019s done well in practice,\u201d\u00a0Saban said<\/a>. \u201cSo we feel really good about, sort of, how he\u2019s continued to improve and develop and gain confidence in what he\u2019s doing, and have a good feeling around the teammates and the receivers and all that type of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
