Michigan struggled against a mediocre Bowling Green team before pulling away in the second half. The Wolverines\u2019 J.J. McCarthy<\/a><\/strong> played his worst game in a Michigan uniform in a 31-6 victory \u2014 Falcons head coach Scot Loeffler<\/a><\/strong> said some of it had to do with his team emulating U-M\u2019s defense and playing well up front.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are arguably the best defense that I\u2019ve seen, and the offense reminds me of the 1999 offense (under Tom Brady),\u201d Loeffler said. \u201cThey\u2019re excellent. They can run the ball and pass. But I\u2019m super, super, super proud of our guys coming in here and battling and not laying down. We\u2019d have loved to do some things better, but we were put into some really, really tough circumstances, and I\u2019m proud of some of those guys that went in there and never even took a practice rep this week in practice and battled their tails off.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe run the same defenses they run, and I think our scheme is good. But we\u2019ve got good players. They put pressure on the passer and made him move around. We knew he was dangerous. He\u2019s a great player. Not a good player; a\u00a0great\u00a0<\/em>player. I\u2019m really proud of our kids, how they handled him. J.J. is an All-Big Ten type of dude.\u201d<\/p>\n

But his team had no shot to win at Michigan, especially after backup quarterback Camden Orth went down. Bowling Green lost starter Connor Bazelak Thursday, but Orth played well in the early going. The third stringer, Hayden Timosciek, was the scout team quarterback all week, and they barely even tried to throw with him. They weren\u2019t going to come back with him under center.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Still, they battled against what Loeffler called one of the best fronts in football.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI was happy with our offensive front. There are two interior guys they have that are first round draft picks, and they played their tails off,\u201d Loeffler said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His own defense rose up to\u00a0hold the Michigan offense in check.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe gave them a lot of looks just like they do, [Michigan D.C.] Coach [Jesse]Minter does,\u201d he said. \u201cMy goodness gracious. We\u2019ve copycatted it. Their scheme is awesome. They\u2019ve got good players; we\u2019ve got good players. Scheme\u2019s cool, don\u2019t get me wrong \u2026 I love it. But it\u2019s all about the players.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michigan just had more, but Bowling Green arguably had more to be proud of Saturday night than the Wolverines. They just didn\u2019t have enough firepower.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Michigan debuted a new light show at night, maize and blue flashing lights during which the \u201cnormal\u201d lights were turned off during timeouts.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey probably scheduled us for the night game to test the lights, I would assume,\u201d Loeffler, former Michigan player and coach, said with a laugh. \u201cBut it was pretty cool. It\u2019s a great environment. It\u2019s a great place. I think it\u2019s one of those special places to play a game.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt hit me on Thursday, and then Thursday all the emotions and all the great people I\u2019ve seen around \u2026 seeing them today was really special. Those guys mean the world to me, just like my players mean the world to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
