Even if it was a bit vanilla compared to how he may have to dial things up vs. Texas A&M, you can see a lot of what he’s looking to do. Were there constant blitzes? How often was their safety help over the top?

We charted it all (see bottom of this article), and here are some of the interesting takeaways:

* On 16.3 percent of plays Miami – at the snap – had six or more players lined up at line of scrimmage in position to attack the offensive line (8 of 49 snaps) … note that this is just what the defense showed, not who wound up rushing

* On 10.2 percent of plays the team rushed six (5 of 49)

* On 32.7 percent of plays the team rushed five (16 of 49)

* On 42.9 percent of plays the team rushed four (21 of 49)

* On 14.3 percent of plays the team rushed three (7 of 49)

* On 61.2 percent of plays there was a two high safety look (30 of 49)

* On 38.8 percent of plays there was a one high safety look (19 of 49)

* On 0 percent of plays there was no safety help over the top (0 of 49)

* On 40.8 percent of plays someone at the line of scrimmage appearing he’d be rushing dropped into coverage (20 of 49)

* On 32.7 percent of plays it was a defensive lineman dropping back off the line to help in coverage (16 of 49)

* On 2 percent of plays there were 8 players in the box at the snap (1 of 49, a third and two with 2:32 to go in third quarter)

You can see in general that Guidry makes it look like an aggressive, attacking D that will be constantly blitzing and get after you. And sometimes it is (43 percent of the time the defense had five or six players that were rushing into the backfield). And sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes a linebacker or safety blitzes. Sometimes a linebacker or defensive end drops into coverage off the line.

Which is how he can confuse a QB and an opposing offense.

Now, are there dangers like when you see Nyjalik Kelly and Wesley Bissainthe trying to cover a slot receiver? Sure.

And it will be an interesting chess match in this department when Texas A&M coordinator Bobby Petrino tries to pick apart Guidry’s scheme.

May the best man / team win.

MIAMI DEFENSE DATA POINTS

FIRST QUARTER

Miami (OH) drive starts at 13:26

1-10 Hawks25 (13:23) Shotgun #5 B.Gabbert pass incomplete deep right to #10 G.Larvadain.

5 at line, 7 in box; 1 high safety; 5 rush; DL (Nyjalik Kelly) covers slot WR man to man

2-10 Hawks25 (13:19) Shotgun #5 B.Gabbert pass complete short right to #10 G.Larvadain for 4 yards to the Hawks29 (#0 T.Couch).

4 at line, 7 in box; 2 high safeties; 4 rush

3-11 after false start Hawks24 (12:22) Shotgun #5 B.Gabbert sacked for loss of 5 yards to the Hawks19 (#12 J.Harvey).

4 at line, 6 in box; 2 high safeties; 4 rush

Miami (OH) drive starts at 04:02

1-10 Hawks25 (04:00) Shotgun #9 K.Tracy rush middle for 1 yard gain to the Hawks26 (#5 K.Kinchens).

4 at line, 6 in box; 1 high safety; 4 rush

2-9 Hawks26 (03:15) Shotgun #8 K.Davis rush right for 1 yard gain to the Hawks27 (#3 A.Mesidor).

6 at line, 6 in box; 1 high safety; 4 rush; DL (Kelly) and LB (Corey Flagg) drop back at snap

3-8 Hawks27 (02:29) Shotgun #5 B.Gabbert pass complete short right to #13 M.Marshall for 7 yards to the Hawks34.

6 at line, 6 in box; 2 high safeties; 4 rush (LB Flagg, Wesley Bissainthe drop into coverage at snap)

SECOND QUARTER

Miami (OH) drive starts at 14:53

1-10 Hawks22 (14:52) Shotgun #5 B.Gabbert pass complete short right to #10 G.Larvadain for 14 yards to the Hawks36 (#22 J.Davis).

4 at line, 6 in box; 2 high safeties; 4 rush

1-10 Hawks36 (14:00) Shotgun #0 R.Amos rush middle for 0 yards to the Hawks36 (#5 K.Kinchens; #23 K.Cloyd).

4 at line, 7 in box; 1 high safety; 5 rush (Kam Kinchens comes in with the linemen)

2-10 Hawks36 (13:22) Shotgun #0 R.Amos rush middle for 1 yard gain to the Hawks37 (#12 J.Harvey).

5 at line, 6 in box; 2 high safeties; 5 rush (Davonte Brown comes in with the linemen)

3-9 Hawks37 (12:36) Shotgun #5 B.Gabbert pass complete short right to #10 G.Larvadain for 7 yards to the Hawks44 (#0 T.Couch; #7 D.Brown).

4 at line, 6 in box; 2 high safeties; 4 rush

Miami (OH) drive starts at 10:55

1-10 Hawks40 (10:54) Shotgun #5 B.Gabbert rush middle for 6 yards gain to the Hawks46.

5 at line, 6 in box; 2 high safeties; 4 rush (Bissainthe covers slot man one on one off the line)

2-4 Hawks46 (10:06) Shotgun #0 R.Amos rush middle for 1 yard gain to the Hawks47 (#4 K.Smith; #31 W.Bissainthe).

5 at line, 7 in box; 2 high safeties; 5 rush

3-3 Hawks47 (09:18) Shotgun #5 B.Gabbert sacked for loss of 9 yards to the Hawks38 (#31 W.Bissainthe).

5 at line, 6 in box; 2 high safeties; 6 rush (Bissainthe blitzes, Francis Mauigoa was at line and also rushed)

Miami (OH) drive starts at 02:33

1-10 Hawks25 (02:33) Shotgun #5 B.Gabbert pass complete short left to #10 G.Larvadain for 10 yards to the Hawks35 (#0 T.Couch), out of bounds.

4 at line, 6 in box; 2 high safeties; 4 rush

1-10 Hawks35 (02:01) Shotgun #5 B.Gabbert pass complete short middle to #10 G.Larvadain for 30 yards to the CANES35 (#22 J.Davis).

4 at line, 7 in box (Kinchens comes down); 1 high safety; 6 rush on the play action fake

Of note at this point of the data: We are seeing Miami play a lot of off coverage and protecting deep while attacking the line, and you can see the cost of that with the last couple of easy gains given up (this is in the final two minutes of the half with UM ahead 13-0). On those back to back gains of 10 and 30 yards what happened? On the first play you saw how the quick pass beat the soft coverage, and on the second you can see how the linebackers were fooled by the play action fake and pressed up which left the middle of the field open. Miami will likely need to press up more against the Aggies … or will be forced to with these types of plays (gifs of both plays below).

via GIPHY

via GIPHY

1-10 CANES35 (01:46) No Huddle-Shotgun #5 B.Gabbert pass complete short left to #10 G.Larvadain for 3 yards to the CANES32 (#11 C.Flagg Jr.; #0 T.Couch).

4 at line, 6 in box; 1 high safety; 4 rush

2-7 CANES32 (01:27) No Huddle-Shotgun #5 B.Gabbert rush left for 1 yard gain to the CANES31.

3 at line, 5 in box; 2 high safeties; 3 rush; DL Nyjalik Kelly used in coverage

3-6 CANES31 (01:06) Shotgun #5 B.Gabbert pass incomplete deep right to #13 M.Marshall.

6 at line; 1 high safety; 5 rush with Corey Flagg dropping in coverage

THIRD QUARTER

Miami (OH) drive starts at 15:00

1-10 Hawks25 (15:00) Shotgun #3 K.Mozee rush middle for 1 yard gain to the Hawks26 (#3 A.Mesidor; #23 K.Cloyd).

4 at line, 7 in box; 1 high safety; 3 rush with DL Akheem Mesidor in coverage

2-9 Hawks26 (14:19) Shotgun #8 K.Davis rush middle for 7 yards gain to the Hawks33 (#51 F.Mauigoa; #20 J.Williams).

4 at line, 7 in box; 2 high safeties; 4 rush

3-2 Hawks33 (13:34) Shotgun #5 B.Gabbert pass incomplete short left to #8 K.Davis.

6 at line, 6 in box; 2 high safeties; 4 rush At snap Te’Cory Couch blitzes from nickel with DL Nyjalik Kelly and LBs KJ Cloyd and Francisco Mauigoa dropping into coverage

The above third down was one of the more complex plays on defense that Guidry dialed up, perhaps a bit indicative of what the Canes will do against Texas A&M (this was a third down situation with the Canes ahead 16-3).
