Michigan\u00a0snagged a commitment<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0from 2024 Lexington (Ky.) Frederick Douglass wide receiver\u00a0Jeremiah Lowe<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0last week and are closely eyeing one of his sought-after teammates \u2013 2025 wide receiver\u00a0Aveion Chenault<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Chenault) has big hands and he has that top athleticism,\u201d Frederick Douglass head coach\u00a0Nathan McPeek<\/strong>\u00a0told\u00a0The Wolverine<\/em>. \u201cHe\u2019s a 38-40 inch vertical kind of guy. It\u2019s unbelievable what he can do in the air and stay in the air. Obviously, he has a lot of basketball highlights. I think he\u2019s going to have a big junior season. Defenses are going to have to have a good plan for him. To me, he has all of the tools to be a major Power 5 guy and play for the elite programs like Michigan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chenault publicly reported his Michigan offer on May 10. He holds other offers from Ole Miss, Kentucky, Illinois, Purdue, Duke and West Virginia. He\u2019s added close to 10 pounds to his frame this offseason and will see a more prominent role in the Frederick Douglass offense because of last year\u2019s senior wide receiver corp graduating.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to McPeek, the fast rise in Chenault\u2019s recruiting process hasn\u2019t bothered him because of seeing the players before him go through the same journey as Lowe.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s good,\u201d McPeek said. \u201cWe have a really close bond within our program. We had a lot of great seniors last year and Jeremiah is now entering his senior season. Class after class with guys who went through the recruiting process have shown the underclassmen the way and how they have to be different. You have to do extra. If you\u2019re only going to do the minimum, you\u2019re not going to get the offers from the Michigans of the world. Jeremiah has done it the right way and has done a great job of being that example for a lot of guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chenault\u00a0made his latest visit to Michigan on July 30<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0for the annual BBQ at The Big House, where he was joined by Lowe, who committed four days later. Taking part in workouts with strength and conditioning coach\u00a0Ben Herbert\u00a0<\/strong>and wide receivers coach\u00a0Ron Bellamy<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0were among the trip\u2019s highlights.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said the visit went good,\u201d McPeek said. \u201cObviously, we\u2019ve been up there a few times before but he said (the barbecue) went good. He posted some pictures in the uniform, which was great. As I said, everyone in the nation should be recruiting him.\u201d<\/p>\n

McPeek is building up contact with Bellamy and has a great relationship with area recruiter\u00a0Steve Clinkscale<\/strong><\/a>, who led the way in securing a pledge from Lowe. Clinkscale\u2019s sons play for Frederick Douglass and NCAA rules allow him to watch Frederick Douglass games and events. That unique tie has helped with establishing a connection with Chenault.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Clinkscale and Bellamy) have been doing great with it being so early in the process for Aveion,\u201d McPeek said. \u201cMichigan offered him based on what they saw in the spring. I think it\u2019ll be an ever-evolving thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

At 6-foot-2, 178 pounds, Chenault is not yet ranked by the On3 Industry Ranking. <\/p>\n
