Nebraska<\/a><\/strong> wideout Marcus Washington<\/a><\/strong> is expected to be back and practicing at full speed very soon, head coach Matt Rhule<\/a><\/strong> said on Saturday. Rhule had hoped Washington would be available by now, but he\u2019s not overly concerned about the long run.<\/p>\n

Washington had a cast on his hand for a broken bone removed earlier this month. And while the recovery cost him a chance to participate in a scrimmage on Saturday, Rhule things he could be on the practice as soon as Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was hoping he\u2019d be able to do something today,\u201d Rhule said<\/a>. \u201cProbably early next week. All signs point to him being healthy for the long run.\u201d<\/p>\n

Washington was highly productive for Nebraska in 2022. He caught 31 passes for 471 yards but just one touchdown. His receptions and receiving yard marks were both good for second on the team behind Trey Palmer<\/a><\/strong>, who is off to the NFL.<\/p>\n

Prior to play at Nebraska, Washington began his career at Texas<\/a><\/strong> where he played three seasons before transferring. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Rhule was previewing Washington\u2019s return at the end of July<\/h2>\n

Rhule provided an update on Washington\u2019s injury during\u00a0media availability<\/a> on July 31.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarcus has a broken bone in his hand,\u201d Rhule said. \u201cSuffered in the summer. We think that they\u2019ll take the cast off on Monday, and he\u2019ll be splinted and able to practice on Tuesday. Today he did all the movement running stuff, and then went over with the return to play guys and just ran and stayed in shape. Unfortunate for him but he\u2019ll be back next week.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rhule also made an impassioned plea to get another pass catcher eligible<\/h2>\n

Arik Gilbert\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> status for the 2023 season is still up in the air and\u00a0 Rhule isn\u2019t pulling any punches regarding his feelings for the matter.<\/a><\/strong> The\u00a0Georgia<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0transfer\u2019s waiver has yet to be cleared from the NCAA and with just weeks before the season\u2019s start, time is running out for a decision to be made before the 2023 season.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not finalized yet. I\u2019m going to be really disappointed if he doesn\u2019t get it. He\u2019s the most deserving young man of that. If he doesn\u2019t get it, the NCAA shouldn\u2019t even have the waiver,\u201d\u00a0Rhule said<\/a>. \u201cBut there are a lot of parties involved. A lot of entities out there that don\u2019t have people\u2019s best interests at heart. Arik deserves, 100%, in my opinion \u2014 in my humble opinion \u2014 the great thing about me is that I\u2019ve been through enough that I say what I think.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he doesn\u2019t get it, no one should have this waiver.\u201d<\/p>\n
