Purdue\u2019s first training camp practice of 2023 is in the books. In all, the Boilermakers will have 19 practices in camp under first-year coach Ryan Walters<\/a><\/strong>. Today, the first seven periods of practice were open.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take a Deep Dive!<\/p>\n

1 \u2013 Good energy at the first training camp practice. Players running between periods, lots of chatter, encouragement. The weather cooperated, as well. It was warm, but not hot and muggy. CB coach Sam Carter<\/a><\/strong> is always handing out fist bumps.<\/p>\n

2 \u2013 Walters says players will vote on permanent captains at the end of camp. How many will there be? Walters says it depends on who gets the most votes.<\/p>\n

3 \u2013 Walters said FAU transfer WR Jahmal Edrine<\/a><\/strong> made some plays today.<\/p>\n

4 \u2013 No. 23 Mondrell Dean<\/a><\/strong> catches your eye. He\u2019s BIG for a running back, listed at 6-3, 240. It will be interesting to see if the true freshman stays at running back. Dean was a formidable defender in high school, earning linebacker of the year honors in West Virginia last year.<\/p>\n

5 \u2013 Speaking of RBs, Walters likes the make-up of the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cTyrone (Tracy)<\/a><\/strong> is really embracing that move (from WR), has changed his body,\u201d said Walters. \u201cAnd he looks comfortable. He looks like a running back. To add him to that mix with Mock and Dylan (Downing)<\/a><\/strong>, I\u2019m excited about what those three bring to the table.\u201d<\/p>\n

6 \u2013 Some key guys we not full-go: C Gus Hartwig<\/a><\/strong>, TE Garrett Miller<\/a><\/strong>, DB Ethon Cole<\/a><\/strong>, CB Salim Turner-Muhammad<\/a><\/strong>, OLB Khordae Sydnor<\/a><\/strong>, OT Daniel Johnson<\/a><\/strong>, OL Andre Oben<\/a><\/strong>, DE Prince Boyd.<\/a><\/strong> Hartwig, Miller and Johnson are coming off knee injuries. Cole was out all spring with injury after enrolling early. Not sure what\u2019s up with Turner-Muhammad and Sydnor.<\/p>\n

MORE:<\/strong> Ryan Walters \u2018liked the energy, liked the communication\u2019 of first training camp practice<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

7 \u2013 Several players were taking part in drills but wore red jerseys: DE Sulaiman Kpaka<\/a><\/strong>, LB Clyde Washington<\/a><\/strong>, OLB Scotty Humpich<\/a><\/strong> and walk-on OL Drew Woodruff<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

8 \u2013 Myriad players fielded punts from the Jugs machine, as the search is on for return men. T.J. Sheffield<\/a><\/strong>, Andrew Sowinski<\/a><\/strong>, Curtis Deville<\/a><\/strong> and Addai Lewellen<\/a><\/strong> were among them. It was a cavalcade of players. Stay tuned.<\/p>\n

9 \u2013 K Ben Freehill<\/a><\/strong> showed a nice leg on a handful of field-goal attempts. Speaking of kickers, I noticed Iain Ramage<\/strong> is on the roster. If you recall, the Purdue student caught the attention of special teams coach Chris Petrilli<\/strong> during a specialists camp this summer when he earned top punter honors. Ramage just signed up online for the camp when he saw Petrilli\u2019s tweet about it, with the hopes of putting on a good enough performance to get attention and earn a walk-on spot. He did just that.<\/p>\n

10 \u2013 Cam Allen<\/a><\/strong> was asked about Purdue being picked to finish sixth in the Big Ten West in the Cleveland.com poll: \u201cWe love it. That\u2019s all I\u2019m saying. We love it.\u201d<\/p>\n

11 \u2013 Marcus Mbow<\/a><\/strong> cites his footwork and athleticism as reasons why he\u2019s a good fit to move from guard to offensive tackle, a spot he played in high school. He also says he\u2019s improved his strength. As for adapting to a new blocking scheme, Mbow says there hasn\u2019t been much of a learning curve. \u201cWe block. That\u2019s all we do.\u201d<\/p>\n

11 \u2013 Purdue will be back at it on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.<\/p>\n
