South Carolina<\/a><\/strong> created a lot of excitement about the direction of the program with how they closed last season<\/a>. Now, heading into the fall, On3\u2019s J.D. PicKell<\/a> says this can be the season that defines what Shane Beamer\u2019s<\/a> tenure in Columbia can truly become<\/a>.<\/p>\n

PicKell felt the pulse of the Gamecock\u2019s program<\/a> in an episode of \u2018The Hard Count\u2019<\/a> while at SEC Media Days<\/a>. He described this campaign as the one that helps everyone realize what they are as a team and what they can be as a program as they continue to move onward and, hopefully, upward.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018What are we?\u2019 is the sentiment. But, even more so, they\u2019re saying, \u2018What is South Carolina going to be after we leave?\u2019. For the guys in that locker, for a guy like Spencer Rattler<\/a> who\u2019s not going to be back at South Carolina after this coming season,\u201d PicKell said. \u201cWhat kind of legacy are we leaving? What\u2019s the foundation of South Carolina football<\/a>?<\/p>\n

\u201cGoing into year three, you now have, for the most part, your personnel if your Shane Beamer in how you\u2019ve recruited<\/a> and used the portal<\/a>. You have your standards, you have your culture,\u201d continued PicKell. \u201cLike, the first two years, you\u2019re kind of trying to get it together. They did a really good job doing that at South Carolina. But now, in year three, it\u2019s like, \u2018Okay. What are we? What do we want to be? And what do we want South Carolina to be set up to be in the future?’\u201d<\/p>\n

In order to do so, PicKell looked to the trenches for the Gamecocks. If South Carolina wants to have the season that they\u2019re wanting, he says it will start with the performance of both lines.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat this comes down to for South Carolina? A couple of things, the first of which being you\u2019ve got to be sturdy on the offensive line and the defensive line. The defensive line could not stop the run, the offensive line was not consistent protecting Spencer Rattler,\u201d PicKell said. \u201cIn the SEC, y\u2019all<\/a>? In a line-of-scrimmage league? That is essentially like paying rent. To exist competitively in this conference? You have to be sturdy on the lines of scrimmage. No ifs, ands, or buts. No other way around it. That is the deal. That\u2019s step one.\u201d<\/p>\n

From there, he looked to Rattler in his final season of college football<\/a>. In order to take the next step forward, he says South Carolina needs him to be the player he was at the end of last season rather than at the beginning and middle.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe second piece of that is Spencer Rattler picking up where he left off at\u2026He\u2019s not without fault. We saw a different Spencer Rattler over the last couple weeks of the season than we did September to October. It\u2019s just the way it was,\u201d said PicKell. \u201cYou need to see him be consistent, need to see him cash in. If you put a run game<\/a> behind him and you protect him? You can ask whatever you want of Spencer Rattler. If you\u2019re going to equip him with the right tools to succeed? You then expect him to succeed because he\u2019s got the all the arm talent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bottom line is you\u2019ve seen what\u2019s under the hood<\/a> with Spencer Rattler. You\u2019ve seen the ability, you\u2019ve seen him do it before. It\u2019s not just potential. There\u2019s some real-life things that he\u2019s accomplished,\u201d PicKell said. \u201cBut he has to be the guy to be able to capitalize for them to take that next step, to get over eight wins, or to get back to eight wins even.\u201d<\/p>\n

South Carolina made a big leap from 2020 to 2021 and another jump from 2021 to 2022. However, with 2023\u2019s campaign drawing close<\/a>, PicKell says the last thing that the Gamecocks can become is content.<\/p>\n

Luckily for them, though, he believes that they have the quarterback and the head coach for the job<\/a> in order to make sure that doesn\u2019t happen en route to their loftier goals.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to what they\u2019ve done the past two years? They\u2019re excited about that. It\u2019s a step in the right direction. But it\u2019s not what Spencer Rattler came back for,\u201d PicKell said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t come back to win eight football games. He came back to play for a New Year\u2019s Six Bowl, he came back to have a shot at making some noise in the SEC<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you think they\u2019re shooting for anything lower than that? You\u2019re out of your mind,\u201d said PicKell. \u201cThat\u2019s not the standard<\/a> that Shane Beamer, as a true competitor, is holding his locker room to.\u201d<\/p>\n
