Winners and Losers: Poor week for Kansas State and Big 12

Winners and Losers: Poor week for Kansas State and Big 12

KSO covers the biggest winners and losers in the world of Kansas State and college athletics.

Winners

1.) Branding: Not only did Kansas State extend their apparel deal with Nike, but Jareem Dowling keeps building the K-State brand as well. The Wildcat assistant basketball coach helped get an emote of the Wabash Cannonball in NBA 2K24.
2.) Tang: Jerome Tang said Kansas State was going to fill all 13 scholarship spots, and they did just that. Big man Will McNair committed to K-State earlier this week. He is a transfer from Mississippi State and comes with a lot of experience after playing in the last two NCAA Tournaments.
3.) BYU: The Cougars now has the most impressive win in the non-conference portion in the Big 12 after defeating Arkansas at home. I thought that the chances of BYU winning in Fayetteville were slim, especially after falling behind 14-0 in the first four minutes of the game.
4.) Sinnott: Though Kansas State tight end Ben Sinnott had a few drops against Missouri, he still had 78 yards receiving and two touchdowns. He is the only Wildcat tight end since 1996 to have multiple touchdowns in a game and has done it twice.
5.) Recruiting: With a night game against UCF on Saturday, the K-State visitor list could be very impressive for this weekend. Stay tuned throughout the week for updates on that.

Losers

1.) Bragging rights: Who knows when the next time Kansas State and Missouri will play. Because of that, losing to the Tigers hurts K-State a little more.
2.) Alabama: For the talk of Oklahoma State not having a quarterback, Alabama may not have one either. Three different quarterbacks have played for the Crimson Tide already this season and neither one has been impressive.
3.) Big 12: Not only did Kansas State fall on Saturday, three other losses by teams in the Big 12 were to Ohio, Miami (Ohio) and South Alabama. Not only that, Kansas could barely survive a road trip to Nevada.
4.) Pittsburgh: Losing to back-to-back regional rivals who could be at the bottom of the Big 12 this year is a rough look for Pittsburgh. They are the lone Big 12 punching bag. The Panthers are a far cry from where they were with Kenny Pickett and Jordan Addison in 2021. Phil Jurkovec did not even have 100 yards passing against West Virginia.
5.) Explosive plays: Lack of explosion on the K-State offense has hurt through the first three weeks. Hopefully Keagan Johnson will provide a spark as he gets healthier. On the other side of the coin, Missouri hit a handful of big plays and it helped their offense tremendously on Saturday.
