Wiltfong Whiparound: New RPMs, big visits this weekend, Michigan pushing for touted RB
News, notes and buzz on the latest developments on the recruiting trail.
Recent RPMs
Corona (Calif.) Centennial On300 quarterback Husan Longstreet to Texas A&M: The blue-chip passer has not finalized his plans but the intel favors the Aggies over Auburn, Ole Miss and Oregon heading into Sunday’s decision. Longstreet visited Texas A&M twice this spring and has a great relationship with offensive coordinator Collin Klein. Two visits to Auburn were also big needle movers, including a return this past weekend, so we’re not sleeping on the Tigers. Oregon will continue to recruit Longstreet regardless of what the decision is Sunday. Longstreet ranks as the country’s No. 6 signal-caller.
“He is coming real close,” Longstreet’s father Kevin told On3 of a decision on Wednesday afternoon.
The latest thing Longstreet has done is talked to former quarterbacks of Klein’s and Freeze to get their thoughts on playing for each staff.
Leo (Ind.) High On300 tight end Brock Schott to Miami: Teamed with colleague Chad Simmons on this one. In the last written Whiparound on Tuesday we talked about the great spot the Hurricanes were in for the Hoosier State product and now we like that pulse even more two days later and have logged the predictions. Ohio State is the main competition but the way Miami has prioritized the 6-foot-3 1/2, 215-pound Schott has the ACC program in pole position. Earlier this week, Mario Cristobal and his staff landed a commitment from On300 tight end Luka Gilbert out of Ohio and things are definitely heating up with another good one out of the Midwest. Miami currently has On3’s No. 15 ranked class.
Millville (NJ) High receiver Lotzeir Brooks to Alabama: This one looks like it could be done soon for the Crimson Tide after Kalen DeBoer, Jamarcus Shephard and the staff had the dynamic playmaker on campus last weekend. Brooks had a state-record 22 touchdowns as a junior and is a top target for Alabama in this 2025 cycle. I went back and looked at some old notes I had on Brooks and forgot that he was potentially close to committing to Georgia around this time a year ago. Fran Brown was leading the charge on that one and Syracuse will keep battling here regardless of what happens with Brooks. Obviously it didn’t happen with UGA and now it’s looking like the Bulldogs will have to defend Brooks on Saturdays for years to come. The Crimson Tide currently have On3’s No. 6 ranked class.
Burlington (Ky.) Cooper four-star edge rusher Austin Alexander to North Carolina: Ted Monachino and Jason Jones have done a good job in this recruitment for the Tar Heels. He’s been on campus a couple times and is a top of the board target for UNC. They love him on the edge, and this is a young man that is just as high on what North Carolina can do for him off the field as they can do for him on it. The Tar Heels currently have On3’s No. 23 ranked class.
Alexandria (La.) High running back JT Lindsey to LSU: Offered by the Tigers this week, Lindsey raved about his experience in Baton Rouge in March as well, pointing to playing on the big stage for great coaches. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s in the fold sooner rather than later, a home run hitter who rushed for nearly 1,800 yards and 26 touchdowns as a junior. LSU wants three backs this cycle to get the scholarship numbers in the room up to five next fall. They have Harlem Berry committed and in addition to Lindsey they’d love to add all-purpose back James Simon who is as equally dangerous catching the ball as he is between the tackles.
Enterprise (Ala.) High On300 safety Eric Winters to Auburn: The coveted in-state target has been on The Plains multiple times this spring including A-Day this past weekend and the pulse of this recruitment seems to be with the Tigers. He’s at Georgia this weekend and is also keeping Miami and Tennessee warm, but Auburn is setting the pace. Winters loves the staff and is excited about the opportunity to be part of a roster that returns Auburn to the top of the hierarchy in college football.
Little Rock (Ark.) Parkview Magnet athlete Quentin Murphy to Syracuse: Fran Brown and his staff are pushing for a Top25 class this cycle and they have Murphy on campus this week and the intel favors the Orange. Murphy has a national offer list but he loves what Brown and company are doing and sees an opportunity to help build it up.
Big Visits On Tap
The On3 Industry’s No. 2 ranked prospect and No. 1 offensive tackle in five-star plus David Sanders Jr. is back at Tennessee for a second-straight weekend. This time he’ll get to experience life as a student-athlete, attend a class while getting back around players on the team and coaching staff. Sanders has been visiting the Vols since the eighth grade and they should not be slept on in this recruitment. Georgia, Ohio State and Tennessee are all in on Sanders, who obviously loves Clemson and grew up a Tigers fan. The addition of Matt Luke to that program has been major. Alabama and the new staff are also looking to make a move and South Carolina’s spring starts the official visit portion for Sanders at the end of April. He’ll hit Clemson, Tennessee, Alabama and Ohio State in June for his officials and then try and make a decision. Other key targets visiting Tennessee this weekend include Toms Rivers (NJ) High On300 offensive lineman Jaelyne Matthews who looks like a Georgia lean on the RPM but the momentum is actually with the Vols right now. Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman On300 receiver Derek Meadows will be in town. Notre Dame was the favorite coming into the spring but Alabama, Georgia and LSU have all made a move and now it’s the Vols turn. Charlotte (NC) North Mecklenburg defensive lineman Charles House is a priority prospect expected as well.
Ohio State welcomes back On3’s No. 1 ranked receiver and the On3 Industry’s No. 3 prospect overall in Dakorien Moore to campus for the spring game. This is the LSU’s second visit to Columbus of the spring. The first he loved the intensity of practice and saw why Brian Hartline has a strong track record of having his five-stars meet their potential as first rounders. Texas is obviously in the middle of this one, so is Oregon who gets a return visit in May. Then come the officials to all the programs named. The Tigers will have to work hard to hold on to Moore and he’s giving the Buckeyes as good a shot as anyone to flip him. A couple other big names visiting this weekend include is the country’s No. 1 linebacker Jonah Williams out of Galveston (Texas) Ball and On3’s No. 1 prospect in the 2026 class in defensive lineman Jahkeem Stewart who could reclassify to 2025. Stewart has been super excited about this OSU visit as the Buckeyes battle USC, Texas, Miami and of course LSU among others.
Zephyrhills (Fla.) High five-star plus cornerback DJ Pickett, the No. 7 overall prospect in the country, visits LSU this weekend and Oregon the next. Both of those programs have momentum in this recruitment but I still feel if Miami does what they aim to do this season on the field and compete for a College Football Playoff berth, they’ll be tough to beat in the end for Pickett. He was just back in Coral Gables two weekends ago. Speaking specifically to LSU going into this visit, Pickett and Corey Raymond have a strong rapport, Pickett loves the tradition-rich defensive back history in Baton Rouge, and he always feels at home when hanging out on campus. He thinks this could be a special LSU class and he’s certainly thinking strongly about being part of it.
Manchester (Ga.) High five-star plus defensive lineman Justus Terry, the No. 8 overall prospect in the land, returns to Georgia. A USC commit, Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs will try and do what they did with Mykel Williams and Christian Miller and flip a home-grown product from the Trojans. Nobody is going to sleep on the Bulldogs moving forward and Terry was obviously once committed to UGA before flipping to USC. All of this also applies to edge rusher Isaiah Gibson out of Warner Robins, who is also a Trojans verbal. Other weekend visitors I like Georgia for include On300 receiver Travis Smith Jr., On300 edge Darren Ikinnagbon (recent On3 prediction alongside Chad Simmons) and defensive back Dijon Lee, who is making his second visit of the spring. Donte Williams is leading the charge for Lee and meeting Smart in March was big for the Mission Viejo (Calif.) product. Conroe (Texas) High blue-chip cornerback Dorian Brew is another headliner for G-Day.
Michigan gaining momentum with a coveted running back
Cleveland (Ohio) Heights On300 running back Marquise Davis is at the top of the Wolverines board and he was on campus over the weekend. Him and new running backs coach Tony Alford have a long-standing relationship.
“Michigan went well,” Davis said. “A highlight for me was again the people and the efficiency of the practice. The way they premiere their running backs, they are a priority.
“Seen everything I needed to.”
The 6-foot-1, 200 Davis has a Top 10 that also includes Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida, USC, Ohio State, Penn State, Missouri, Texas A&M and West Virginia.
Davis is coming off a terrific junior season where he rushed for 2,228 yards and 35 touchdowns and he also had 63 tackles, five stops for loss and three interceptions.
Kentucky is trying to get Davis on campus this week.
