Who’s left? Looking at remaining Ohio State wide receiver targets
COLUMBUS — Ohio State very rarely misses out on wide receivers it has prioritized on the recruiting trail.
But that’s what happened on the Fourth of July when five-star Plus+ Duncanville (Texas) wide receiver Dakorien Moore committed to Oregon. Ohio State, Texas and LSU were also finalists for the No. 1 wide receiver in the On3 Industry Rankings and by On3.
The Buckeyes were somehow a long shot to begin with in landing Moore’s pledge, but the miss still has some impact on their quest to continue deepening the room.
Lettermen Row looks at who’s left and reanalyzes the current commits.
Who’s Left
There are really just two names Ohio State is waiting to hear from at this point. Four-star Mission Viejo (Calif) wide receiver Phillip Bell and five-star Orlando (Fla) Jones wide receiver Vernell Brown III. Let’s head out west first.
Bell is the No. 176 overall prospect and the No. 20 wide receiver in the On3 Industry Rankings. He made two visits to Ohio State this year. Bell visited on March 30 when Ohio State hosted its annual student appreciation day, a pretty significant day for recruits to be on campus. He then returned for his official visit the weekend of June 14. There are two predictions in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine for Bell to pick the Buckeyes, both came from On3 recruiting insiders Steve Wiltfong and Chad Simmons.
The only main competitor to Ohio State for Bell is the nearby USC. He was on the Trojans’ campus the final official visit weekend of June. Lettermen Row is hearing that Bell is slated to make a decision sometime in August, but that could change.
Ohio State was the favorite for Vernell Brown III in the spring and heading into official visits. But like the weather, things change quickly in recruiting. He’s a Florida legacy and that hasn’t played a major role in his recruitment, but the Gators are seemingly the program to beat. Brown is the No. 32 overall prospect and the No. 6 wide receiver in the On3 Industry Rankings. Brown made his official visit to Ohio State from May 31 to June 2.
The Class
+ Four-star Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic wide receiver Quincy Porter is the polished, big-bodied wide receiver in the Buckeyes’ class. The 6-foot-3.5, 200-pound Garden State native is the No. 31 overall prospect and the No. 5 wide receiver according to On3. He committed to Ohio State on June 14.
+ Four-star Wayne (N.J.) DePaul Catholic wide receiver De’zie Jones is an underrated wide receiver prospect across the country if you ask the folks in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Garden State native is the No. 236 overall prospect and the No. 35 wide receiver in the On3 Industry Rankings. He committed to Ohio State on March 30.
+ Three-star Mansfield (Ohio) Ontario wide receiver Bodpegn Miller will be a project for wide receivers coach Brian Hartline. But, it’s been a long time since Hartline has had a prospect so raw and talented head to Ohio State. The 6-foot-4, 180-pound Ohioan is the No. 674 overall prospect and the No. 98 wide receiver in the On3 Industry Rankings. He committed to Ohio State on June 21.
