Who’s hot, who’s not in Miami recruiting: 4 prospects the Hurricanes are hot on, 3 recruits Miami has cooled on
“Who’s hot, who’s not” is a quick-hitter intel piece on 2024 under-the-radar Miami prospects the Hurricanes have started zeroing in on and targets Miami has cooled with.
Here are some names you need to know that Miami is locking in on and a few names the Hurricanes are slowing communication with.
Who’s hot
A few names have started jumping out.
+++ Miami is well in the picture for Salem (Va.) 2024 three-star linebacker Chris Cole, who has an official visit locked in for June 23. Cole is only the No. 912 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking but has gained serious interest from top programs. The nephew of former Miami linebacker Rohan Marley has official visits set to Miami June 23; Penn State June 2; Notre Dame June 9; and Georgia June 16. Miami linebackers coach Derek Nicholson stopped by Salem to watch his workout earlier this month, and head coach Mario Cristobal is regularly talking to the prospect with more than two dozen offers. Cole said no program has recruited him with the group effort Miami has, and the Hurricanes love the 6-foot-3, 210-pound linebacker’s upside.
+++ There was initially some question about how much of a priority target Rogers (Minn.) Senior 2024 three-star EDGE Wyatt Gilmore was earlier this spring, but with one Miami spring visit under his belt and an official visit to Coral Gables locked in for June 2, he’s become a prospect the Hurricanes are high on. Co-defensive line coach Jason Taylor flew to Minnesota earlier this month to check up on the No. 628 overall prospect, and the 6-foot-4, 245-pound recruit is also hearing regularly from co-defensive line coach Joe Salave’a and head coach Mario Cristobal. Taylor has been responsible for much of Gilmore’s interest in the Canes, and the Hurricanes now lead on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine with an estimated 37.9% chance after the three-star prospect set his official visit. The Hurricanes are ahead of Minnesota at 25.1% and Iowa and Nebraska with less than an estimated 10% chance each. Oklahoma, Minnesota, Purdue, Kansas State and Iowa have also pushed in recent weeks.
+++ Miami has taken a different approach with La Grange (Ill.) Lyons Township 2024 three-star defensive lineman Eddie Tuerk, recruiting the No. 507 prospect as an interior offensive lineman instead of on the defensive front seven. He hears “pretty much daily” from Cristobal and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal, who flew to Illinois to check up on him last week. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound three-star locked in his Miami official visit June 16-18 hours after Mirabal dropped by his school. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine lists Illinois as the frontrunner with an estimated 23% chance to land the three-star prospect. Northwestern is listed second with a 19.7% chance; Iowa is listed third with a 13.9% chance; and Miami is listed fourth with an 11.6% chance. Tuerk also has an On3 NIL Valuation of $24k.
+++ Mirabal also dropped by Kankakee (Ill.) to check up on 2024 four-star offensive tackle Marques Easley the same day he checked up on Tuerk as Miami continues to target the Midwest. The 6-foot-7, 300-pound lineman is the No. 237 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking and already has official visits set to Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Oklahoma, although the Hurricanes are continuing to make the effort to bring him south.
Who’s not
+++ Miami has effectively stopped communication with IMG Academy four-star safety Jordon Johnson-Rubell, whose contact with the Canes’ staff started falling off during spring practices but picked back up during spring break. He heard from Cristobal, secondary coach Jahmile Addae and former defensive analyst DeMarcus Van Dyke during his spring break but said he’s “not really hearing from” Miami’s coaching staff anymore. Johnson-Rubell is the No. 144 overall prospect in the class and stands at 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds.
+++ Booker Pickett Jr. may be a Miami legacy, but the Hurricanes have cooled significantly on the Tampa (Fla.) Wharton 2024 four-star EDGE. Miami is still listed as the leader in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, but sources told CaneSport the program has cooled on the 6-foot-2, 183-pound EDGE and No. 99 prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking.
+++ Miami has also dialed back in Miami (Fla.) Columbus 2024 four-star EDGE Dylan Stephenson’s commitment. The No. 195 overall prospect isn’t hearing from the Canes as much as he previously was, and Florida State now leads heavily in the RPM. We also recently put in an RPM prediction projecting the 6-foot-4, 215-pound prospect to Florida State after projecting Stephenson to Miami earlier this spring.
