Who made a move in Georgia’s final preseason scrimmage?

Who made a move in Georgia’s final preseason scrimmage?

This time next week we’ll be getting ready for Kirby Smart to step behind the podium to kick off Georgia’s first game week of the season. The Bulldogs officially ended camp, in Smart’s mind, on Saturday with it’s second and final preseason scrimmage. DawgsHQ has delivered tons of intel on that scrimmage and after combing back through our notes, we’ve got a short list of guys who we believe have made significant moves.

RB Nate Frazier

The Move: Into the plan

We’ve all heard plenty of Nate Frazier hype at this point. I don’t think I was alone in seeing it coming from a mile away. His high school film was absolutely electric and he has brought that to the Georgia practice field. Frazier had a long run on Saturday but that might not be what helped him most. The true freshman took a couple of big shots in the live scrimmage and took care of the football. That’s going to earn him some trust.

CB Ellis Robinson

The Move: Deeper into the competition

I’d be willing to bet that either Daniel Harris or Julian Humphrey is going to get the start against Clemson in the season opener. I’d be shocked if it’s Robinson. But with that said, I think he’s earning himself some playing time with each passing practice at this point. Robinson went down with a wrist/forearm injury in the fourth preseason practice and hasn’t missed a beat since. That toughness and his propensity for making plays on the football and playing sticky coverage in competitive situations is going to go a long way with this Georgia staff.

STAR Joenel Aguero

The Move: Into the starting lineup

Aguero has been the favorite to win the STAR/nickel job since Tykee Smith forewent his final season of college ball and entered the 2024 NFL Draft. He had a good spring and a so-so start to spring drills, but the Georgia sophomore has come on late in camp. Multiple sources say he had a great scrimmage on Saturday and got 100 percent of the first-team reps. It sounds like he has held off JaCorey Thomas and Kyron Jones.

WR Cole Speer

The Move: Into the conversation

No one was talking about Speer this spring or through the first part of camp. There was zero buzz about him after Georgia scrimmaged for the first time this preseason. Then, in the second scrimmage, Speer got a lot of work with the ones and finished the day with over 100 yards receiving. Speer is going to play special teams in 2024. He’s trying to get himself into the top six or seven options or receiver and if that happen’s he’ll have some chances. Right now he has simply entered the chat.

QB Gunner Stockton

The Move: Into a death grip

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Gunner Stockton is Georgia’s backup quarterback going into the 2024 season. It’s his third year in the system and, by all accounts, he turned in a really strong camp. Stockton got significant reps with the ones in Saturday’s scrimmage and led scoring drives. He knows the offense inside and out after more than two years in the program. Ryan Puglisi and Jaden Rashada are talented dudes but they’ve got a lot of ground to make up.
