Penn State tweets of the day

Penn State picked up a big transfer portal addition on Sunday night when Pa., native and former Ohio State wrestler Rocco Welsh picked the Lions. The one-time Buckeye, who lost to now graduated Nittany Lion Carter Starocci in the 2024 174-pound finals, took a redshirt season in Columbus in 2024-2025 to add weight with plans of competing next at 184 pounds. That’s the weight class Starocci vacates. And, it’s the one Welsh will battle redshirt freshman Zack Ryder at, he told Justin Basch on the BaschAMania podcast.

“If I want to be the best wrestler in the world and accomplish my goals, then, if I can’t make a starting lineup, then I’m not on the right track,” Welsh said. “So I think just just being around all those good guys, like you said, a crowded room, but I think that’s really going to help me grow. It’s just going to be awesome. I’m not going to be worried about anything, just getting better every single day and helping them get better. And, hopefully they help me get better.”

Welsh went on to add that NIL was not the determining factor in his transfer portal recruitment. He will arrive in State College later this year. He also plans to compete at 79 kilograms (163 pounds) at the U.S. Open. The freestyle event is April 23-27 in Las Vegas.

Quote of the day

“It’s definitely a different vibe in the running back room. I feel like he’s definitely putting God first, which I love. Every coach doesn’t do that. But he’s setting the standard that we want be the best in the country. He can talk the way he wants to because he’s done it before. He’s been with the best and won national championships. So, just seeing how he coaches and the drills that he does, it all implements right into the practice. I like his ball knowledge and he’s giving me a plan for how he wants to develop me. I trust it.”
