What to know about Notre Dame
• Notre Dame is in the same position it was in four days ago — the Fighting Irish will win the regular season ACC championship with a victory. The Irish could not get the job done on the road against NC State, but they really like their chances at home against Florida State. Notre Dame is 13-0 at home this season.
• Hannah Hidalgo’s National Player of the Year candidacy seems to be slipping a bit with JuJu Watkins of USC coming on strong. Hidalgo is sandwiched between Watkins and Florida State’s Ta’Niya Latson as the nation’s No. 2 scorer. Hidalgo going head-to-head with Latson will be must-see TV in South Bend on Thursday night. They average over 50 points per game between the two, with Latson leading the country at 26.2 and Hidalgo right behind her at 24.7. If Hidalgo outduels the nation’s leading scorer, she’ll have another bullet point in her favor for her aforementioned NPOY candidacy.
What to know about Florida State
• It definitely starts with Latson as the No. 1 scorer in the country, but senior forward Makayla Timpson is a 6-2 force averaging 17.3 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. She’ll be a problem for the Notre Dame front court. Senior guard O’Mariah Gordon is always capable of helping Latson out in the scoring department, too. She puts up 16.7 points per game. In those three, Notre Dame has plenty to worry about in terms of staying locked in defensively. Defense was not the Irish’s strength in their last game Sunday at NC State, and FSU is the second-highest scoring team in the NCAA.
• Florida State has four losses away from home this season, and the places the Seminoles have been defeated on the road mostly pale in comparison to Purcell Pavilion — Illinois, Tennessee, Cal and Stanford. Home cooking could certainly be a factor tonight. A big-time Notre Dame edge on the glass might come into play, too; Florida State is the worst team in the ACC at allowing the opposition to secure rebounds. The Irish are lethal when afforded extra possessions and getting out in transition following defensive rebounds.
