What commitment of Aaron Scott Jr. means for Ohio State

COLUMBUS — Ohio State landed one of the most important prospects on its 2024 board.

Four-star Springfield (Ohio) cornerback Aaron Scott Jr. has committed to the Buckeyes.

Scott chose Ohio State over Michigan and Oregon in a recruitment process that has nearly pushed him to the brink. The No. 4 cornerback and No. 29 overall prospect per On3 gives the Buckeyes their 19th committed prospect to the 2024 class, and their eighth in-state commit.

But Scott’s commitment means much, much more than just that.

Lettermen Row breaks it all down and just how significant this is for Ohio State.

Let’s dive in.

What commitment means for Ohio State

Ohio State picked up its first win against Michigan in over two years on Sunday.

No, it wasn’t the last Saturday in November. It wasn’t in Ohio Stadium or Michigan Stadium.

It was on the recruiting trail.

Aaron Scott had his top three of Ohio State, Michigan and Oregon, but this truly was a battle between the Buckeyes and the Wolverines all the way until the very end.

That’s indicative of two things. One, the Wolverines’ resurgence and domination in the Big Ten is starting to show with high-level prospects on the recruiting trail. Two, even though the Buckeyes haven’t been where they used to be, they can still recruit like it.

Yes, Ohio State should win a battle for an in-state target, but the world is so different and loyalty is hard to come by. This recruiting victory is indicative that the Buckeyes can and will lock down their own backyard for the prospects they want. No matter who’s trying to invade.

What Scott gives Ohio State on the field

Scott is the cornerback of tomorrow.

He’s a tall 6 feet and weighs about 180 pounds. His length and physical playstyle match up perfectly with what defensive coordinator Jim Knowles asks for in his 4-2-5 scheme. Scott was keen on finding a fit where he can play a majority of the snaps in press man and he quickly learned during his Ohio State official visit that’s exactly what the Buckeyes do.

“We just got more in-depth with everything,” he said. “That was my main thing coming into this visit. I got the response I was looking for and I heard everything I needed to hear.”

Paired up with four-star Cleveland (Ohio) Glenville cornerback and Ohio State commit Bryce West, the Buckeyes have one of the most lethal cornerback duos of any recruiting class right now.

How Aaron Scott Jr. impacts class ranking

Aaron Scott Jr. becomes the fifth-highest-rated commit in the Buckeyes’ 2024 class. He moves the needle for Ohio State in the On3 Team Industry Rankings and it is closing in on No. 1 Georgia.

Furthermore, the Buckeyes continue to outpace the rest of the Big Ten for the conference recruiting crown.
