West Virginia drops hype video ahead of Backyard Brawl matchup with Pittsburgh

The West Virginia Mountaineers (1-1) and Pittsburgh Panthers (2-0) are set to renew one of the more heated rivalries in all of college football this weekend, the Backyard Brawl. The Mountaineers dominated the Panthers last year with a 17-6 victory. West Virginia ended up finishing 9-4 last year, whereas Pitt limped to a 3-9 finish, the worst record in Pat Narduzzi’s time there.

On Friday evening, the Mountaineers dropped a hype video for the matchup, narrated by former WVU quarterback, Rasheed Marshall.

West Virginia has a number of explosive weapons to watch, including one of the best backfields in the Big 12 in running backs Jahiem White and CJ Donaldson. Donaldson tied his career high with 125 rushing yards last week against the Albany Great Danes. White was explosive too, with 10 carries for 100 yards and a touchdown. West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene is one of the more dynamic dual threats in the country. Against Albany, he had over 300 all-purpose yards and four total touchdowns.

On the other team, Pittsburgh features Alabama transfer quarterback Eli Holstein. And while he stumbled early last week against the Cincinnati Bearcats, throwing an interception in the first half, he didn’t disappoint down the stretch. Holstein became the first Pitt freshman quarterback to throw for over 300 yards in consecutive games since Alex Van Pelt did it in 1989. He completed 20 of 35 passes for 302 yards, while tossing in three touchdowns and one interception.

His resiliency helped the Panthers to battle back from a 21-point deficit and stun the Bearcats, 28-27. Pitt kicker Ben Sauls drilled a 35-yard field goal with 17 seconds remaining to lift his team to the comeback victory.

More stats on West Virginia-Pitt and The Backyard Brawl

West Virginia and Pitt are separated by 75 miles, splitting two games since the rivalry was renewed in 2022. There were 11 years when the game wasn’t played before 2022. Both teams won the game in the past two years when it was played at home. The Pitt Panthers are now 2-0 for the first time since 2021, when they brought home the ACC Championship.

Pitt running back Desmond Reid currently leads the nation in all-purpose yards (244 per game), while also ranking fifth in rushing yards (146.5 per game).

Overall, Pittsburgh still has a big lead in the rivalry, but things have been much more even in the past 60 years. West Virginia is currently 26-23-2 against Pittsburgh since 1963.

WVU and Pitt are set to tangle on Saturday, September 14th. Kick time is set for 3:30 PM EST. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
