WeAreSC Wrap: USC beats Arizona in triple overtime

WeAreSC Wrap: USC beats Arizona in triple overtime

The USC Trojans (6-0, 4-0) got off to a disastrous start against the Arizona Wildcats (3-3, 1-2) on Saturday night but managed to claw back for a 43-41 win in triple overtime. It’s the third-straight closer-than-expected win for USC, but the Trojans remain undefeated this season. Here, the WeAreSC crew gives a quick postgame look at what matters from this one for the Trojans.

The USC Standouts

Caleb Williams. The superstar quarterback did not have his best day passing, finishing 14-for-25 for 205 yards and a touchdown. But he scored three touchdowns on the ground and was the reason the Trojans eventually escaped with the win.

You’ll Remember

You’ll remember this game as the game when the undefeated Trojans seemed destined for a major loss both in conference and the national picture but survived on both counts in triple overtime when linebacker Mason Cobb and corner Prophet Brown combined to tackle Arizona’s DJ Williams, who was sweeping left in the backfield, to destroy a two-point conversion attempt, saving a heart-pounding 43-41 victory in the Coliseum.

— Greg Katz

It Was Over When…

That play in the previous section. It took all 60 minutes and then some for USC to finally put Arizona away. The Trojans should have won this game any number of times, including at the end of regulation and in double overtime.

What We Learned

The Trojans came into the contest against the Arizona Wildcats favored to win by 22 points. However, when the folks who set the lines are relying on Caleb Williams playing well from the beginning of the game until the end, things don’t always work out.

We learned that USC can come back from a 17-0 deficit and win at home by 2 over a team with a backup starting at QB when USC’s Heisman winning QB uses his legs to pick up the necessary yardage and points when the passing game isn’t working.

We also learned after the game from Lincoln Riley that another team circled USC and played their best game, while USC still isn’t prepared to be the hunted.

— Marc Kulkin

Up Next for the USC Trojans

USC goes on the road to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as the difficult second half of the Trojans’ schedule gets underway. The Notre Dame loss to Louisville today takes a little bit of the shine away from the USC – Notre Dame matchup, but that won’t matter once the ball gets kicked off next Saturday. This is an undefeated USC team heading to South Bend and both the Notre Dame team and fans will be ready.
