WATCH: Oklahoma OC Jeff Lebby previews SMU
Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby met with the media on Monday to preview Saturday’s matchup against SMU. Lebby had his offense clicking in the Sooners’ season-opener against Arkansas State.
SMU got off to a terrific start against Louisiana Tech, cruising to a 38-14 win. The new-look defense for the Mustangs really impressed, especially up front.
“They really dominated for four quarters,” Lebby said. “Six sacks. Gave up 25 yards rushing. Played dominant. It jumps off the page at you. Got a really good unit that we’re preparing for. They’ve got a bunch of guys that have played a whole bunch of ball. Only four true returning starters for SMU, but they did a really nice job in the portal being able to go get some guys from different places. They’re playing really well with a lot of confidence right now.”
With one of the key matchups being the offensive lines vs. the defensive lines on both sides, Lebby knows his group has to replicate what it did in their 73-0 win. SMU’s defensive line has depth and talent.
“I thought our guys played incredibly tough. Very physical. Played incredibly hard,” Lebby said of the offensive line. “Had some edge about ‘em. We need to be a tough, nasty, physical football team, and that’s how we need to play. So, building on that, we added the right people in the run game. We’ve got to win more one-on-ones, but proud of how our guys played. Again, did not play perfect at all. We’ve got to clean plenty up. Fundamentally. Technique. All those things. When you watched them, they played hard. They played really, really violent.”
Kickoff on Saturday between SMU and Oklahoma is set for 5 p.m. CT on ESPN+. The last time the Mustangs and Sooners played was in 1995, a 24-10 win for OU in Norman.
