WATCH: Casey Woods reviews SMU offense entering bye week

SMU offensive coordinator Casey Woods met with the media on Tuesday to break down how the Mustangs played against Charlotte and where things stand entering the bye week.

SMU’s offense ranks No. 28 in total offense, averaging 451.2 yards per game, and 40th in yards per play at 6.08 yards per play. The Mustangs aren’t playing up to their full potential, but they’re doing some things the staff covets, like effort.

“I mean, you can always be better,” Woods told reporters. “Obviously, we’ve expressed not fully putting everything together in such a way and I think we all see that and I do think that there’s encouragement. I’ve not seen this week’s rankings, I know that we are standing statistics-wise, I know that we’re in the upper half and offense in our league. So we’re having success even though it’s maybe the flow of it’s not exactly what you always want it to be.

“I think that there’s the most encouraging thing is that we are playing extremely hard. Everyone says that but I’ve been part of teams that play pretty hard, and we’re playing extremely hard and we are playing extremely physical, way more physical than at any point we were in the season last year.”

SMU quarterback Preston Stone is 48th in passing yards per game, throwing for 238.20 yards per contest. At the same time, he’s tied for 87th in completion percentage.

Stone and the offense are still coming together. Whether it’s a different running back emerging each week or the multitude of options in the passing game, SMU’s still got some work to do. It starts with Stone’s execution, which is where the staff wants it.

“We are a different offense than we were last year. We’ve got a different quarterback than we had last year,” Woods said. “From an operational standpoint and Preston’s strengths, we’re doing our best to play to his strengths, which are different than what Tanner’s were. I do think that people are doing a nice job trying to defend our deep passes, right, they fear that out of us and so that makes us work that intermediate game more than we’ve been forced to at any point up to this point last year. And I think that’s good. I think Preston is executing in those the way we want him to.”
