Walk on commitment Trent Uhlir has Nebraska football in his blood

Trent Uhlir had been waiting. The 6-foot-2 and 230-pound linebacker from Battle Creek (Neb.) went to several Nebraska football games last fall and has been hosted by Matt Rhule and the new staff multiple times. Uhlir’s father and three uncles played for Nebraska. He’s grown up following Nebraska football and says it’s in his blood. He’s excited to have this opportunity to pursue his dream.

“I am walking on at Nebraska!” Uhlir said. “Coach Rhule offered me the opportunity yesterday. They told me I was supposed to get it on Sunday, but I got it, and that’s all I care about.”

The wait is over and Trent Uhlir knows that he will have to work to see the field at Nebraska

Uhlir had opportunities to do track in college, but he had been waiting on Nebraska to ask him to walk on. He grew up watching Nebraska. His father played for Nebraska in the early 90s, and he also had three uncles play at Nebraska.

“I have been waiting on Nebraska to ask me to walk on. I had a few track schools that I had to turn down, but I knew that this was where I wanted to go, and I have known it for two or three years. Now that I have achieved it, I am pretty happy, but I have a lot of work to do.

“My father is Todd Uhlir, and he played for Nebraska back in the 90s,” Uhlir said. “I have three uncles that played at Nebraska too. You can say that it’s in my blood. I have always been a Husker fan; I love them, love them to death. I am happy that I get to play for them.”

Nebraska wants to look at Trent Uhlir as both a linebacker and fullback

The Huskers have told Uhlir he is not locked into a single position. Nebraska plans on looking at him on both sides of the football to see where he can have the quickest impact on the team.

“Nebraska doesn’t know exactly where I will play. They are going to take a look at me at both linebacker and fullback to see what I would be best at.”

Uhlir’s father is excited for his son but wasn’t pushing Trent to go to Nebraska. His father preferred that Trent play another sport in college if he could get an opportunity.

“They are really proud,” Uhlir said. “My dad is super happy even though he didn’t have anything to do with it. He told me to go and do what I wanted, whether it was track or football.

“He really didn’t want me to play football. I used to be a big baseball player, and he really wanted me to play baseball. I am really happy that I chose football.”

Battle Creek High School does not allow mid-year graduates. He says because he has to go his entire senior year, he will nearly have a year of college credits when he enrolls at Nebraska.
