VQ Podcast: What happened and how to fix it for Tennessee

Tennessee dropped its first game of the season on the road to Florida on Saturday and will need to regroup with UTSA coming to town for the second home game of the year. What went wrong and how can those mistakes be fixed for Tennessee?

What did Josh Heupel have to say about the play of his starting quarterback Joe Milton or the play of the offensive line in front of him? What is the best group on the offensive line and what did the defense have such a tough day tackling the ballcarrier?

Join Brent Hubbs, Austin Price, Eric Cain and Rob Lewis on this week’s episode of the Volquest Podcast. It’s presented by Exterior Home Solutions. For a free estimate, give them a call at 865-524-5888.

Quote of the Pod on Tennessee

Brent Hubbs on Tennessee fans’ frustrations with QB Joe Milton…

“Well, here’s the other thing with Joe there’s three things here that I think fuel. A lot of the fans’ conversation about this one is Nico’s a five star. Okay, No. 1 player in the class at On3 and that’s an immediate reaction from fans about how good he is whether he is or he’s not when time will tell so that’s one thing.

Second thing is Hendon Hooker was probably better than we even gave him credit for and he got a lot of credit last year. Hooker made a lot of wrongs right with his ability to make plays off schedule out in the perimeter with his legs, just righting wrongs. Hooker was really good. I won’t say generational – that’s probably a little much but he in this offense was a perfect marriage and was unbelievable. A year ago, you knew there’d be a drop off and probably didn’t realize just how good Hendon was a year ago and what that offense was doing.

Then thirdly, you got Joe. You’re never going to hit all the deep balls right? But he missed a couple Saturday. What’s that conjure up reflections of ‘Overthrow Joe.’ The two-point conversion, he doesn’t force it in there and try to make a play. He runs out of bounds. A la Ole Miss. All those things gets conjured up in the result of the conversation or the result of that thought throughout the thought process is Joe is the problem. Joe is not good enough. And that’s the that’s the billing of being the starting quarterback at Tennessee, replacing a really good player and not producing as much as you need to produce. Again, many problems this team has to fix – beyond Joe Milton playing a little bit better than did he played. He was much better in Florida than he was against Austin Peay. He’s way down the list of the issues that you’ve got going on with your offense right now.”
